Okay, Mother’s Day has passed. But the memories will linger forever. Trout Fishing is open; did you get your license yet? The Annual Gold Rush Car Show was unbelievable, great, fascinating. Yes! Still, it seems to get better every year. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of The Downtown Business Association, (DBA) and Oro Dam Cruisers. The proceeds of this event always benefit local non-profit projects and charities.
Did you take the time to go to the Feather Fiesta Days Kiddie Parade, sponsored by our local Kiwanis Club? “Oh, how darling.” Were your children in the Parade? What about The Kent Family Magic Circus? What a wonderful treat it was to watch a real live family performing magic! And, goodness gracious, they live right here in Oroville. It’s the month of May, and there are hundreds of things yet to do, see and to investigate right here at home.
Honoring a Veteran, or a 100 Veterans, is appropriate this month. Did you go to The Exchange Club’s Grand Parade? I agree it was the best parade I have seen in a coons age, what a nice crowd.
Spirits are high, and Our Town, Oroville does have an abundance of talent! If you don’t know this for sure, then you better get out and about more often. Don’t be a recluse, join your neighbors in Historical Downtown Oroville. Connecting with this great, close-knit community is a lot of fun. This is the time of year for all of us to set aside a weekend, or week day, to visit local museums and the historical sites, scattered around the county. One doesn’t have to look far for free publications regarding Our Town and surrounding communities. Look for: 101 Things To Do in Butte County, Adventures (a guide to recreation and outdoor adventures). If you are a visitor or a long-time resident, take home a copy of Visitor & Newcomers Guide and/or The Source, a Community Resource Directory.
Did you miss out on Opening Night, “Leading Ladies” at The Birdcage Theatre, earlier this month? Shame on you!. You may have missed your last opportunity to see a hysterically funny comedy. Advertising for talented folks to audition mentioned they were looking for men who had an authentic British accent, could do the Tango in drag, and was willing to give up evenings to rehearse and three weekends to perform. Terry Bartlett and Dennis Ashley won the leading roles. Adding spice to the fun in this zany play are familiar actors, Smantha Sanz, Ted Ryan, Carole Falcon, Frank Castello, Dennis Perri and Katy Ryan. The back-stage crew gave tremendous supoort: Barbara Daggert, Patty Ashley, Gini Bartlett & Rex Beauchamp. All were part of the production team. Don’t miss your last last chance to see Leading Ladies. This coming weekend (May 18, 19, 20th). It’s your last chance to see the results of all their time and work.
This coming weekend will also be the last production of the season. Believe me, with this All Star Cast, the Director, Bill Falcon, had a ball. Amusing? More than Amusing. It’s belly-laughs, from start to finish. The last show is scheduled for Sunday matinee 2 p.m.
Congratulations to Ted and Katy Ryan, who are celebrating their 10th season with Birdcage. Congratulations are also in order to Terry Bartlett, who has only recently retired from Bartlett’s Hearing, so he can dedicate more time to the theatre and his charming wife, Gini. And I tip my Gold Hat to Susan Blood, who has done a great job this past year, serving in the capacity of President of The Birdcage Theatre. I have watched her tirelessly work day and night, and give up her weekends to benefit Birdcage. I heard she has accepted to serve another term as President, and she has made a long list of Honey-Do’s…What fun it is to watch these folks in action. I suggest you have a great summer, and come back all charged up to do fantastic things for the 29th Season (2012-2013)!
If you wish your children would grow up and be famous, or at least considerate of others, pay attention to the “I WISH”— a Musical/Fantasy at the State Theatre on Saturday May 19, at 2 p.m. Tickets are only $5 for adults and $3 at the door for children through high school age. Watching the parents and grandparents of the 60 plus actors and actresses is almost as much fun, as the actual performance. This is the 3rd year this fantasy has been performed at the State Theatre, thanks to the efforts of The Writer, Carol Kitchen, and Director, Jennifer Stampanoni, of Stamp Your Feet Performing Arts Center.
This is an expensive, charming production. It took a lot of donations, sponsorships, grants and fund-raising to make this third year production possible. The original Proclamation to Recognize and Support the “I WISH” Program was signed by Mayor Steve Jernigan on June 16th. 2009.
Low-Impact Exercise Classes on Monday and Wednesdays are offered in Partnership with local Arthritis Foundation Chapter. Our Instructor Lyndee Caput sets a wonderful example. Classes are on Monday and Wednesday from 1-2:30 at the First United Methodist Church, 45 Acacia. Also, as I understand it, Caput is the instructor at Feather Falls Senior Center on Myers Street.
In preparation for the First Friday in June (June 1), John Casner, (530-533-2721) and Oro Dam Cruisers, along with Downtown Business Association (DBA) are encouraging your participation in The Second Annual Creeper Races in Historical Downtown Oroville. (Last year was a blast.) Get your Creeper Vehicle ready, pick your driver, (anyone 18 to 108, of any gender are eligible). Trophies will be awarded for the best time and original entry. You ask, “What is a “Creeper”? Answer: Creepers are normally used by mechanics laying on their backs, to roll under vehicles, so they can inspect and repair. Well, this is just one more way folks in our town celebrate, get together, and have fun. Hope to see yah downtown, soon.
Well, that’s all for now folks. If you keep reading, I will keep writing, and enjoying my new home and the fabulous friends I have met, and the ones I have yet to meet.
