Avenue 9 Gallery’s Art Guild Awareness Day
On October l3, from 10 to 5pm, Chicoans are invited to a celebration of Avenue 9’s Art Guild made up of twenty art professionals in mediums of ceramics, sculpture, painting, glass-making, photography, jewelry and the creation of children’s books. It will be a day of pageantry, audience art-making, informal demos, and a lively conversation about the historic and current power of art guilds.
Visitors can make mini-monsters from colored porcelain clay bodies using tools and methods provided by master ceramist Chris Yates (his exhibit, shared with painter David Mallory, “Earth’s Bounties,” will be in its closing day). Yates will fire the pliable imps and return them to their makers in time for Halloween. Already made monster-art will be lurking within the “Garden of Earth-y Delights” in front of the gallery.
Inside, more delights await visitors, such as a new $99 wall that accommodates thirty art works by guild members. This sampling of small original art works at small prices makes collecting easy.
At 2pm, Maria Phillips, Dolores Mitchell, and Cynthia Sexton will voice their ideas about “The Art Guild as an Economic and Social System in the Past and in Chico Today.” As always, at Avenue 9, public participation will be encouraged.
The Avenue 9 Gallery and Art Guild “Cat of Arms” designed by Valerie Payne and Maria Phillips, will be formally presented and hung in the gallery. As befits an emblem of creativity, parts can be changed to suit events—“Art the Cat” might be fitted with a saddle for the Chico Palio, or with nine tails to commemorate Avenue 9’s ninth year of existence.
Avenue 9 Gallery and Art Guild is located at l80 E. 9th Avenue. For further information call 879-1821 or consult the web page www.avenue9gallery.com.
