The Newcomer

(by Della Bacon - November 17, 2008)

I spent some time recently at Oroville’s Bird Street Radio Station.  Met with one of the Radio Announcers, Lee Edwards.  He is a volunteer, who showed me around the studio, and  explained some of the equipment.  (A kindly man, with a soft voice and a pleasant smile.  And, rather new to Oroville.)
Looking around the recording studio, one might imagine it to be a CD Wonderland.  The technical equipment, microphones, and switches must require some previous knowledge to be operated efficiently.  I was fascinated.
During our visit,  Mr Edwards asked if I would be willing to be interviewed by him some Tuesday?  My first response was, “Thanks, but no thanks.”  Then I got to thinking about the olden-days, when there was no television.
Radios were a big deal, they were our lifeline to what was going on in the world.  Not like television is today.  Tune your radio to 107.1 FM.  Or stop by the station.  It is located across the street from SCOOPS.  (That’s right on Bird Street a few steps up from “What To Wear,” corner of Myers.)
------------
I’ve said it before, and I will say it again:  When one lives in a small community, somehow, some way everyone is related.  They grew up together, lived next door, or someone attended school, church, married a relative, etc.  Their Mother may have worked with my Aunt.  Who knows?
Take The R. J. Marcozzi family.  They have been around this town for more than 55 years.  And Rudy Marcozzi, Sr., hasn’t moved far from his original business place—a small room on the second story of the State Theatre Building.  At the time he was a Jeweler’s Jeweler.  He built his reputation by working for all the local jewelers repairing and cleaning watches, necklaces, rings, etc.
Today, that Independent Jeweler, Mr. R. J. Marcozzi, has turned his business into a Family Affair.  If you want quality merchandise, expert advise, in Historic Downtown Oroville chances are already know Rudy J. Marcozzi, Jr., the oldest son.  He and his charming wife, Stephanie, work together, along with baby sister Rhonda Ferland and her hubby Mike.  Michele Delliquadri is a cousin and sales-associate.
Who is Wayne A. Teague, II?  His business card indicates he is an “Apprentice Jeweler.”  Rhonda tells me he’s part of the family, like “our-best-friend.”  I know him as Haley’s Dad.  Haley is smart as a whip and barely six years of age.  She is the one who bragged to me that, “My Dad is a Jeweler!  He can do anything.”
Haley:  I believe you.  Your dad is a charmer, so is his Dad, your Grandpa, Wayne A. Teague, Jr.
I saw the Billboard:  “When in hot water, apply ice!”  (Does that mean “diamonds are a girl’s best friend” or, “Let’s make up with a gift of love?”)  It tickled me, and I knew instantly someone had a great sense of humor.  If you are a Newcomer and haven’t met the Marcozzi’s and their best friend Wayne, I suggest you drop by and get acquainted.  They have built their reputation on providing quality repairs, appraising, mounting and diamond settings.  At my age, I appreciate the ICE ... And, treasure each and every memory.
I keep bumping into Chet and Keiko Beates, Managers of Nofrey Self-Storage on South Lincoln, before Ophir Blvd.  That’s the place that has the beautiful All-American Patriotic Landscaping.  (Red, White & Blue).  Chet & Keiko seem to get around and stay involved. That is a good thing.  I adore people who love other people.
The Gift of Warmth Coat Collection is something you might want to help with.  For the second year, Nofrey Self-Storage will set aside storage space for collection of coats, jackets and warm clothing for all ages.  Last year they worked with The Rescue Mission who distributed more than 300 items to those who enjoyed a Thanksgiving dinner at the Mission.
Deliveries of clothing can also be delivered to Butte Community Bank, F.K.O, and the One Stop Business Center.  For more information, telephone Chet & Keiko Beates at 532-0297.
Sure had a great visit with Jon Shult, artist and owner of Broken Color Art Gallery last week.  We learned that we had crossed paths before in the San Jose, Santa Clara area.
That’s all for now folks, please keep in touch by letter to The Digger Shopper & News or E-Mail della@digger.news.com
