Alejandro Mendoza Exhibition Begins August 23
Cuban born artist Alejandro Mendoza brings his unique style of sociopolitical, and religiously charged sculpture to the Chico Art Center. This exhibition is titled Crossing Cultures.
Mr. Mendoza will also be lecturing on the evening of the reception. We hope that you will mark your calendar to attend this free lecture and take the opportunity to ask the artist questions. We would like to honor Mr. Mendoza with an audience worthy of his willingness to visit Chico. Let us show we appreciate him appearing and giving us the opportunity to meet and hold an informal art-talk with an artist such as he.
The majority of Mendoza’s work references the Latin cross, though its content is often beyond the religious implications associated with such imagery. Most of Mendoza’s artwork to be on display will be relief sculpture. There will be a mixture of 3D sculpture and installation work as well.
Though Mendoza’s art references the cross, to him it is a most basic shape. Its image is universal, international. It transcends all cultures, religions and traditions. For Mendoza, it is a symbol of humanity. Mendoza’s art is charged with social, religious and cultural commentary and narrative. His use of the cross implies angst and protest, while at the same time they allude to what is dearest to him, courage, hope and belief. He accepts the ambiguity and symbolism that each work stirs within us. This show is certain to be one of years best in Chico, and one that will create a deserved interest in Alejandro Mendoza’s work.
