ECJ Productions Opens with “Mary, Mary,” May 15-17
An exciting, new theatre production company in Oroville is debuting with the romantic comedy, “Mary, Mary.” Performances of this comedy, which originally had 1,500 Broadway performances, will be May 15-17 and again June 19-21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Veteran’s Memorial Hall on Montgomery Street, directly across the street from The Monday Club.
ECJ Productions Theatre Company bears the initials of and is dedicated to the memory of the artistic director’s father, Everett Charles Johnston, whose dream was that his son, Mark, would someday have his own theatre company. The elder Johnston, a veteran of the Korean War, passed away in October, 2007, but his dream, with the hard work of his wife Dorothy, and many friends and business associates, has become a reality for Mark. “We proudly present ourselves as “Theatre for the Community” rather than “community theatre,” Mark Johnston enthused.
Mark Alan Johnston, a six-time Birdy Award winner, is a seasoned veteran of many California entertainment venues, including the world premiere of “East Baltimore Street” at the Chico Theatre Company, “The Best of Broadway” (annual musical and dance production for the Sacramento theatre community), the Bracebridge Christmas Dinners in Yosemite, as well as numerous productions with the Butte College Theatre Department, the Paradise Performing Arts Center, the Birdcage Theatre, and the Oroville Creative Arts Center. Many will remember him in the outstanding 2007 Birdcage musical “Kismet,” which received rave reviews throughout Butte County.
Johnston is a graduate of Humboldt State University, earning a B.A. in Theatre Arts, and he has studied with renowned Hollywood actor Louis Mandylor, who is best known for his role in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” Johnston’s productions are dedicated to the memory of his father and to the many thousands of other veterans who had the courage to fight and die for this nation.
Tickets for “Mary, Mary” are $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under and are available at Comer’s Print Shop, Discount Books, Galeria Mexicana, and Mugg Shots. Those requesting information on private vocal or acting instruction are asked to call Mark at 533-0755.
