State Theatre’s 80th Birthday Celebration, April 5

The STATE THEATRE, which has been an integral part of downtown Oroville since it was dedicated on April 7, 1928, will turn 80 years old next month. Designed by the same architects who created the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Building in San Francisco and the Paramount Theater in Oakland, the Theater is now recognized in the National Historical Register. The grand opening program included vaudeville acts, and the silent film, “Partners in Crime” with accompaniment on the Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ.
The 80th Birthday celebration will re-create the “opening night” program with a red carpet, searchlights, and various stars of the 20’s arriving in period autos. A silent film classic, “The General” starring Buster Keaton with live musical accompaniment by Dave Moreno on a Theater Organ brought in especially for this event. The vocal stylings of Matias Bombal will complete the program. And yes, there will be cake.
The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. but the stars are set to arrive at 6:45. For more information about this event, please call David Dewey, Cultural Facilities Curator for the City of Oroville at 538-2497.
