Butte County Youth Nexus Wins National Award

Butte County Youth Nexus is one of four programs in the nation to be awarded the 2007 National Exemplary Award for Innovative Substance Abuse Prevention Program.
Youth Nexus is a youth council made up of students throughout Butte County, who are 15-20 years of age.  Since 1999, Youth Nexus has provided over $75,000 in grant awards to youth-led projects in Butte County.
On March 14, Youth Nexus awarded grants totalling $3886 to four organizations in the county: Oroville YMCA, Oroville Hmong Youth, Gridley’s Esperanza Friday Night Live, and the City of Gridley’s Recreation Department.
“These Youth Nexus grants will aid in funding projects to:
•  Provide skill building to youth in areas of philanthropy and grant making, leadership, and advocacy.
•  Decrease young people’s exposure to alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, as well as violence.
•  Fund and support projects that are designed to elicit community and neighborhood-wise social or policy change.
•  Engage young people in opportunities that provide a framework that supports youth as decision-makers and agents of change,” stated Michelle Salas, Youth Nexus Coordinator.
