Rotary Speech Contest

On Monday March 10th the Oroville Rotary Club hosted their annual Rotary Speech Contest. This year, six Las Plumas High School students, ranging in grades nine through twelve, competed for first place and the right to continue on to the next level. This year’s speech topic is “The Power of One,” and the winner at the Rotary District 5180 level, to be held May 10 in south Lake Tahoe, will have amassed winnings totaling $2,100.
Robert Hanson, a Junior at LP and the son of Howard and Sonia Hanson, took first place at the club level and received a check for $200. Robert’s speech began, “I believe the power of one is a metaphoric portrayal of the human mind, illustrating human decision and its ability to change the world and the fates of those affected by it.” Second place went to Janne’ Collins a Sophomore who took home a check for $100, and third place and $50.00 went to Justin Cooley a Freshman. The remaining three participants each received a $25.00 gift certificate from Walmart.
Accompanying the students to the contest, held at The Depot during the regularly scheduled meeting, were the students parents and their principle Ms. Sandy Dovell, and their counselor and contest coordinator Diane Handley.
