The Newcomer

(by Della Bacon - February 19, 2008)
“Make new friends.  Keep the old.  One is silver, the other gold.”  Oroville is ‘gold country.’   One doesn’t have to be rich in dollars to know that one can be rich in friends who can be forever.
Last week I made a new friend, while browsing at one of my favorites dress shops, What to Wear on Bird Street.  I heard laughter in the store and wanted to know what was so funny.  The laughter came from a lady who introduced herself as “Karen.”  When I tried to talk to her, she just giggled and laughed some more.
Now, anyone who has taken the time to know me, knows I am a very serious, dedicated person.  When I get downtown, I am always on a mission.  And, I really don’t have a lot of time for nonsense.  But you also know that laughter  is contagious.  So do I, that is why I wasn’t surprised when all clerks came from around the counter and started laughing as well.  Since no one would fill me in on what was so funny,  I decided to get out of that store, but not before I got this Karen person’s business card.
Once outside, I read her card and discovered she was a hair-designer, who had just started working at the 2110 Salon & Spa on Montgomery Street in Oroville.  Gosh almighty, I’ve heard a lot about this place, and have wanted to visit since the first time I drove down Montgomery Street.  Here was an opportunity I just couldn’t pass up.  So the following day I dropped in the Salon and Spa, made an appointment with Karen H. Brayer to do something about my looks.  What—I didn’t know, but I was sure once inside this hair designer would figure it out, all by herself.  “She” was the professional.
At my designated appointment time, I walked into the store and that silly girl started laughing again.  I just couldn’t believe it!  What in the world is so funny?  Before she began working on me, she introduced me around and I got to meet, in person, some of the super-stars I have been looking for, since writing my column.  There is a ‘Debbie Reynolds’, Gena, Tara and Lisa.  When Karen wasn’t paying attention, I quizzed the other operators.  I wanted to know if she just laughed and giggled in clothing stores, or if she also did it at work?  They told me Karen was a “happy person.”  They also informed me she was an excellent hairdresser, and she could re-style me in no time.  When I found out she was laughing at me, in that clothing store, (What-to-Wear), I nearly fell out of the chair.  Before I could fall, she styled my hair so I can wear my GOLD CAP, in Gold Country.  I love it!
When I return to the 2110 Salon & Spa, on Montgomery Street I plan to try something new.  They can provide a substitute for Candy Kisses.  That is correct, there is a non-fattening substitute for Candy Kisses.  They advertise it as Chocolate Feet.  If you are not interested in dipping your feet in chocolate, you can always settle for a facial or massage.  Either one is good for the soul, relaxing, and fun.
That’s all for today.  Hope to meet you downtown soon.  Look for me in my “Gold Cap”.  And I will be checking you out and be watching for your Chocolate Feet.  (Wonder if one gets the chocolate under the socks, or above the shoes?)   If you have had personal experience about anything in today’s column, please let me know by dropping me an e-mail:  dellabacon@diggernews.com
