The Newcomer
(by Della Bacon - February 12, 2008)
I love Popcorn! When I think of popcorn, I reminisce about movies, theaters, gorging on heavily buttered popcorn and a few chocolate candy bars, while watching a love scene in technicolor, while holding hands with my current boyfriend.
Shortly after I moved to Oroville, I noticed a sign near the UPS office and across the driveway from Bank of America, on Oro Dam Blvd. It read Popcorn Blouses. I wondered how someone could make a blouse out of popcorn?
I have always been interested in crafts. I've always been a crafty person, but not that crafty!
I finally had to investigate. So, I dropped by the little store in the back of the shopping strip. I confess … "My imagination was off-base." The blouses are adorable. But, you have to see for yourself. I can't tell you one size fits all. But, I can tell you that Laura Lombardi, the owner, has informed me the ones I purchase can be as small as a size two or go as large as a 22!
If you have a sweetheart and want to give an unusual gift in a popcorn box, I suggest a red or pink one would be appropriate. Just make sure you tell Laura, The Newcomer sent you.
If you remember nibbling on popcorn while holding hands in a dark theater, your honey will love what I am suggesting for that Valentine’s Treat.
The Scoop Cafe offers ice cream cones and romantic luncheons, even mid-afternoon snacks. There will be Karaoke on Thursday Nights, from 5:30 until 8 p.m. If that is too late for you, just settle for a gourmet lunch and homemade Gelato. No alcohol served; it’s a fun night out for young and old. It’s great for Mom and Dads and children who love to love.
Just a few doors down the street you will find more sweets for the sweet tooth. Check out the Lighthouse Candy Shoppe on Bird Street. A little bird told me the variety is a ‘bomb?’ I mean it is fresh, plentiful, and worth the trip. Get it in a bag, a box, or a handful. If you can’t handle the sugar, they have sugarless, as well.
Remember to tell them “The Newcomer” sent “U”... and drop me a line on my E-Mail della@diggernews.com
