The Newcomer

(by Della Bacon - January 22, 2008)
It’s a New Year!  What have you resolved to do this year, that you didn’t do last year?  I started a night course at the Adult School last year.  I am ashamed to admit I didn’t finish the course.  This year I resolve to complete a computer course.  I am especially interested in ‘speed keys,’ I also would like to know about all the newer gadgets available.  Guess I’ll shop around just to see what’s going on in the computer world.
Talking about new.  Have you investigated the newest computer store in town?  I kept asking someone to tell me about Comp-U-Bytes, the first store to open in the new shopping center on Oro Dam Blvd. at Olive Highway. (Think someone said this is the newly remodeled Montgomery Wards shopping center.)  Since no one wanted to help me investigate before Christmas, I had to do it myself.  While there, I discovered Chris Norwood, who graduated, with honors, from Butte College in 2006. Chris told me it was okay to call him a  Computer Nerd.  He is passionate about working with his Dad,  Gary Norwood.
I also got acquainted with Tanya Bargel of Las Plumas High, class of 2009.  She told me she didn’t know a lot about computers, but was getting acquainted with the inventory that day.  Her grandfather, Jerry Schlegel, retired after 17 years with A Better Deal Exchange, Ace Hardware, and most likely knows everyone in town.  Ironically I met him about 20 years ago, with my son, who was buying material for remodeling his home.
While browsing around I bumped into Mr. and Mrs. Bob Cox, who proudly informed me, they came into the store that day because they had a winning ticket in a drawing.  They hoped they won a brand new computer.  Alas, they won a Flash Drive, and are elated. Shucks, now they have to learn how to use it.  They left the store happy as larks.
Oh yes, I can not forget my new- found friend, James Webster, (who is madly in love with his wife Margaret).  He is  a top-notch computer mechanic who moved to Oroville from Southern California.  I found him patient, friendly, and knowledgeable.  I liked him immediately and got a kick out of hearing him brag about his blushing bride.  He even shared a picture with me.  Jim and Margaret have been married for 10 years.  They met through a computer networking-telephone business. She was born and raised in Oroville, so he to agreed to move to the Gold Country, if she would marry him and bear his children.  James Webster used to build and ship computers for Factory 2 U.   Now he works for Comp-U-Bytes doing repairs and selling the merchandise on the floor.  I’m not a computer whiz, but I am learning a little each and every day.
A little bird told me there are going to be some Fantastic sales going on in downtown Oroville before the end of January.  I dropped by several of my favorite stores and was surprised to see so many sales going on.  I met another newcomer while oohing and aahing about the fancy cocktail dresses and the very reasonable prices at “What To Wear.”  Her name is Karen Brayer.  She is a hair designer with 2110 Salon and Spa on Montgomery Street.  I enjoyed talking with her.  I liked her hair, her style, and her enthusiasm.  We are going to meet again soon.  It’s time I got a perm and a new-to-me look.  I’ll pick her brain about the modern world.
Hey!  Did you know Scoops Cafe has a brand new menu and is planning fun   events for the entire family.  I am anxious to see how their Karaoke Night works out.  It makes sense to me to have Karaoke for all ages on Thursday nights.  The fun begins at 6:30 p.m. Go hungry and enjoy their new menu of gourmet dishes.  There is a lot of talent in this beautiful town.  Scoops Café is located across the street from The State Theater.
That’s all for now.  Hope to see you in downtown Oroville real soon.  I’m wearing “GOLD” in 2008, cause I live in the “Gold Country,” and I am having fun.  If you have the time, drop me a line: della@diggernews.com
