The Newcomer
(by Della Bacon - October 16, 2007)
Are we having fun yet? I know I am; how about you? Last week I was at the Oroville Senior Center (FRSCA) and enjoyed a nutritional luncheon, as planned. After lunch, several of us wandered into a few of the shops on Meyers Street. If you didn’t join us, you missed a fun time. Come on down to the Senior Center today. Bingo starts at 1 o’clock, every Tuesday at FRSCA.
Walking on Meyers Street, I discovered three new-to-me shops. Like a kid in a candy store, I wanted it all! Corkin’s Crossing is right up my alley. I’m a grown-up cowgirl and love western attire. Boots are currently on sale. So, if you are in the market or ever dreamed of going western, you better shop now, while they have your size. You need to know. I was fascinated with the western decor and furnishings. Josh Corkin is every bit as charming as everyone told me he would be.
Talking about decor, walking into The Address store, caught me off-guard. It truly is “Big city style, small-town prices.” For decorating ideas and seasonal treats talk to Sharon Cherry or to the entrepreneur bosses Stephanie, Traci and Jackie. They have it! They flaunt it! Beautiful merchandise, fit for a queen: a great place to find something special for someone special in your life.
Talking about gift-giving, I actually met Elouise Stevenson the owner of Day Dreams. Oh yes, I am overwhelmed at this well-stocked store. If you can’t find a gorgeous gift and the perfect card at Day Dreams, it isn’t available, anywhere. Elegant Elouise is one fantastic, generous lady, with a big heart. She can point you in the right direction, for any occasion. The gift card room is serious, funny and workable for the most fastidious ladies on your list. Hey you guys, go talk to these shop owners. It would be like having a personal shopper, help you buy for and delight any woman, (mother, daughter, good friend, wife or lover).
Betty Jean’s on Bird Street is having a gigantic sale to make room for new merchandise? If you haven’t been to The Address, on Meyers Street, lately you wouldn’t know they too are trying to make room for new merchandise. (I bought a gorgeous area rug that just makes my home more welcoming than before.). I’ll bet all the other merchant’s in down-town Oroville, are clearing out inventory at sale prices to make room for the up and coming holiday season. Do it! Get downtown now. I’m shopping and buying and setting aside wonderful things at great prices. Day Dreams tells me if they don’t have what you are looking for, they will order it. Please don’t under-estimate these go-getters. They are awesome! They tell me, they are ready, willing and able to please you, by ordering what you need from their suppliers...Drop in, ask questions...find out if what they say is true?
LETTERS FROM READERS
Gosh, thank you for taking the time to drop me an e-mail or two. I shall keep trying to keep you informed and answer each of you individually. However, when I get something funny and blunt like this one, it has to be answered through the column. Thanks again for all the wonderful comments and friends who have taken the time to write, e-mail and introduce themselves.
Dear Newcomer, Who are you? Why are you doing what you are doing? What makes you think you are an authority? Signed, Born & Raised in Oroville
Dear Born in Oroville, I really am new to the area, and am fascinated with the town. I am getting out and about and writing from my perspective as a Newcomer. I am not an authority on anything, but am an old-fashioned, down-to-earth, individual who happens to love people. Please keep reading, and writing. I truly welcome your comments.
ANOTHER RESPONSE
Dear Robert M., you are absolutely correct! I’m the same lady you knew from San Joaquin County. I am still easy to talk to, and nice to do business with. What about you? Yes, I will look into forming a Newcomers’ Club in Oroville. If it can be formed, will you come out of your shell, and join the fun. Please don’t be a recluse. There is so much to do, and see, in this darling community. Please, take the time to investigate. In the meantime, why not join the Oroville Garden Club? They meet on the second Thursday of each month. I understand these ambitious ladies have some wonderful ideas and are actively searching for new members.
I’m here and I want to hear from you. When was the last time you read The Digger and turned the page to Community Events? There is an entire page devoted to keeping you informed on what to do, where you can go, and when you can do it best. When was the last time your club up-dated the information, so a Newcomer could find her way. Since there are only so many hours in the day, try to make it easy for me. Please if you are current with modern-day technology use my e-mail address: della@diggernews.com.
