The Newcomer
(by Della Bacon - September 09, 2007)
When was the last time you picked up your copy of Oroville’s Community Resource Directory, THE SOURCE? It has become my answerbook and the very best reference available to me at this time. I cannot believe the many neighbors who have offered their personal copy of The Source, to answer my many questions. Now, I send my out-of-town friends, relatives and business associates copies of The Source to update them on the community. Their responses have been overwhelming.
For the past 25 years, my sister, brother-in-law and their extended family, have spent summers at Bucks Lake. Weather permitting, they hold family reunions and get-togethers a dozen or so times each year. When I told them about my move to Oroville, their comment was: “Oh sure, we know Oroville, we frequently stop for supplies at the large grocery store. But, we rarely go into town.” Well, I’m proud to announce; they now stop and we all seriously shop...downtown. It has become more than a family affair, with sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, neighbors and old friends, all of whom enjoy dropping by on their way from San Joaquin Valley, and Millbrae.
Talking about Millbrae....did you know Fawzi Morrar, and his wife Mia, (the librarian who wears a hat), lived in Millbrae before opening the Discount Book Store? I like the slogan: “The Lowest prices in Butte County.” (It’s not just a bookstore, it’s an information store, which now also carries CDs.) I looked for Betty Jean at Betty Jean’s dress and accessory shop. I found John and Pam Casner. Pam is president of the Downtown Business Association. She and John used to live in French Camp. (My old stomping grounds.) John was employed at Sharp Army Depot. (French Camp, Lathrop, Manteca and Ripon are located between Stockton and Modesto in the central San Joaquin Valley.)
It’s a small world... While doing “quickie investigations,” I discovered Gary and Jerry Lightle are related to an old friend and former associate, Phyllis Lightle. It seems she and hubby Richard were high school sweethearts here in Oroville. They lived in Manteca, where they raised their daughter, Laurie, who still lives there.
New Friends: Anthony Capaci retired from bullfighting some years ago. He did his thing at the Cow Palace, outside San Francisco. Arthur Gamon went to Jefferson Union High School in Daly City, where my sisters graduated. Virginia Rinetti moved from Hayward. She is the proud mother of, Don Davidson, Frank Isham, registered nurses and brothers. Her granddaughter, Lynn Davidson, is a student nurse, following in the family’s caring-footsteps. They all work at Oroville Hospital. (Great-grandmother Corky Watts was a nurse and worked at the hospital for years while raising her family.) Rinetti’s other offspring is Rachell Parker, who works at the State Theater, along with everyone’s friend, David Glover.
This writer is anxious to see Stamp Your Feet Performing Arts Center do their version of Walt Disney’s movie, “Aladdin” at The State Theater this weekend. (Friday and Saturday Sept. 7 and 8). Be sure to catch their annual production. The dancers have worked long and hard getting ready for this performance.
Until next time, keep reading The Newcomer, and look for me to visit your place of business soon. If you can’t wait...let me know by sending an e-mail to della@diggernews.com.
