Meet Della! She’s New in Town.

(by Della Bacon - August 14, 2007)
Please, don’t pick on me.  I’ve just moved to town…Oroville that is. It all seemed to happen so fast!  Or did it?
Last summer I was visiting my only son, who has lived in Oroville for a while.  Jokingly we teased each other about getting older.  Then he popped the question: “Mom, why not move to Oroville?  We could get reacquainted, and be a lot of help to one another.”
While it is true we both are getting older, the thought of moving seemed out of the question. Having lived in the San Joaquin Valley for 30 years, moving would mean leaving my friends and neighbors behind.
Instead of rushing into anything, we agreed to weekly visits.  That meant I was to make the 125-mile drive on I-5 and Highway 70 to Oroville, twice a month.  At first it was spooky. Later, it became a  routine.
I often stayed at Oroville’s Motel 6 on Montgomery Street.  It was there I met Doris Woodward, the manager, (and Kathy, the night clerk), who let me “vent” my sad stories of woe and concern about moving to the area.
With limited knowledge of the area, I became a regular visitor at the Cornucopia Family Restaurant, where I was always greeted with a smile and a wonderful meal.
It was at the Cornucopia, (while waiting for my frequently-tardy son), that I discovered the DIGGER Shopper & News.  My greatest passion is meeting people.  The DIGGER seemed to be a good place to start.  It was full of advertising, tid-bits and the type of businesses I would want to get acquainted with—in the event I made a move to The Gold City.
I began answering ads and exploring the community.   First it was garage sales—then was meeting with Realtors, finding adequate housing, signing a contract and finally, the big move.
Here I am, a newcomer, in a community where everyone knows everyone else.  They are either neighbors, relatives or high school buddies.  How can I fit in?
My attitude?  Have fun... laugh, play and explore.  Try this: “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”  I am hoping to: Make new friends but keep the old...
Are you willing to help me out?  I am easy to talk to, and nice to do business with; Excited to make Butte County my home.  Where do I start?
THE DIGGER was first published 30 years ago, this month.  It seems appropriate to start with an Anniversary Celebration...or would you call it a Birthday Celebration.
Who else do you know celebrating a special occasion in August 2007?
