Call Me the Newcomer
(by Della Bacon - August 30, 2010)
Join me in Historic Downtown Oroville on the First Friday in September? The word is there will be music in the streets, numerous parties on each and every block, end-of-summer discount sales and bargains galore. Thats Friday, September 3rd, after 4 oclock. Come early; stay late. Have we got a date?
There will be music on Myers Street outside of Copa De Oros. Check out the new menu and new chef. That would be Junior (aka Jose), who recently moved here from Santa Cruz, with his wife, Claudia. (Shes working her way through college.) Jose and Claudia will set up the BBQ, and serve delicious tacos on the sidewalk. If you prefer being inside, where it is cool, Jose & owner, Robert Long, will serve you with a smile. Frank Aichelle of The Underground will make you cotton candy, and welcome anyone who wants to browse. Afternoon Delights wants you to drop in and inspect their unique display of lingerie. Jimmy Evans, the Motorcycle Kid, isnt shy, just because he is the newest kid on the block. Most likely hell be entertaining his friends out front. Orovilles well known dance instructor, Kathy Neal, of Creative Arts Center will have her young stars of tomorrow dressed up and swaying to the music. Of course, Miss Jenn of Stamp Your Feet Dance Studio will only be a block away.
What to Wear will continue their sale of womens classy business apparel, jewelry & accessories. Donna Jones of The Coyote Clothing Store will introduce you to a more relaxed look of name-brand attire.
While you are there, please note, Sue Corkins Gallery Interiors on Bird Street has recently had a facelift! I watched this family play together, while working together to change their look. One day daughter, Robin Zanon was hanging from the ceiling giving it a mirror-type affect. The next day, Josh Corkin clung to a tall ladder to paint the red brick exterior redder. Then comes Mother Sue Corkin to add a personal touch to the new awning. Wouldnt you know, the Chief Inspector was Brad Corkin himself. (His critical eye paying close attention to the details.) Yes! The sale goes on… They have cleaned house and have made some terrific buys available to you (and me).
Talking about the Corkin family … did you know Donna Jones of Coyote Clothing (who is in the Corkin Crossing Building) did the upholstery work for Gallery Interiors, at one time? Or that hubby, Allen Jones is a real-live Body Man. (Not body-building!) I mean bodies, like in cars. Housers Music Store is a great place to get in the rhythm of the day. They will provide live entertainment via acoustic music. As one would expect, Pam Casner of Betty Jeans Dress Shop will have her windows decorated with new fall fashions, and be offering changing season sales.
Pho Noodle House is now open for business. (I asked George and Brenda Cairo, who moved from Richmond to Oroville how they enjoyed their lunch? Wow! They gave them 5 stars.) Pho Noodle House is open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week. (Call 532-9630 for more information.) Lakeside Bakery and Delicatessen makes fantastic sandwiches, and awesome bread and treats. You can dine in, phone-in, or pick-up. (Call 532-0900). They are located next to Bella Donna Beauty Salon. (If you ask for Jenna, you can get $10 off any nail service.)
The Birdcage Theatre opens their new season on Friday, September 10th with The Seven Year Itch by George Axelrod. Starring our own, Dennis Perri and Marchia Ryborz. It is directed by that special mother and daughter team, Raquel & Raquelana Pina. Talking about The Birdcage, did you know they, too, are remodeling, upgrading, and planning to have a Social Hour prior to future performances. Remember, the one advantage to getting season tickets is always to have a reserved seat. And, it is a great opportunity to meet the stars.
Local author, Olivia Claire High has published a new book, Crystal Angel. There will be book signing at EFX Fashions on Montgomery Street. While you are there, drop by The Red Fly...theres something for the entire family even babies and grand babies. Check out Rosie Cheeks and take a closer look at the Ali Borene Photography display.
Watch for more information about FRSCA (Feather River Senior Center) on Myers Street. Stephen Fyten is the new President and he has some terrific new ideas for seniors enjoyment. The Senior Center has recently been remodeled, upgraded, and currently is displaying beautiful works of art. I heard Shain Smith, owner of Montgomery Street Pub and the new store, Nookies, will also participate in First Friday events. So dont stay in one place, walk around and discover new stores, new merchandise, friendly people.
Grandma Mildred Allison and her friends are coming to town to celebrate her 100th Birthday, Saturday September 4th at the VFW. I wouldnt miss it. Happy Birthday Grandma Allison. You are one spunky lady. Well thats all folks … Hope to see you soon. della bacon
