Chico Palio Solicits Teams
Chico Palio is here! Designed to be a kick-off celebration for Artoberfest -- a month-long festival of Arts & Culture during the month of October - Palio is seeking schools, neighborhoods, businesses, individuals or groups to race Saturday, Sept. 25 at noon in Chicos Downtown Plaza.
Be part of Chicos history by participating in the 5th annual Chico Palio - a human-powered horse race. This year, more than 20 neighborhood and community teams will compete to win the foot race or design the best horse.
Chico Palio is modeled after Italys Siena Palio horse race, which is centuries old and undoubtedly the most famous in Europe. Instead of racing horses, however, we race humans carrying horse sculptures. Instead of intense physical interaction between man and beast, we feature competition in the form of pageantry, creativity and, of course, a physical race.
Following the Siena tradition, each competing team will be assigned a representative flag, designed by local artists. The beautiful silk flags represent physical and iconic images of our community and are designed by local artists.
In addition, there will be kindergarten and first-graders from Hooker Oak Elementary School and Neal Down Elementary School who will lead the charge with a kazoo parade. Mothers and daughters from the National Charity League are volunteering to help with some of the creative crafts well have on hand.
To participate in this unique and inspiring event, go to www.chicopalio.org and download an entrance sheet and rules. To volunteer, or for more information, please call 530-228-2860 or e-mail deblucero@sbcglobal.net.
