Call Me The Newcomer
(by Della Bacon - July 26, 2010)

There is no doubt about it, I Am Sold on Oroville!
It has been such fun getting acquainted with the town and the people who make up the town. It has been a privilege to submit my ramblings to the finest editor I have ever known, Patti Miller, wife of David Miller, the Publisher of The Digger Shopper & News. For me, The Fun started on the inside last page of The Digger more than three years ago, when the Millers gave me an opportunity to expose my left eye and report as della bacon, The Newcomer, to the City of Gold.
In the beginning, my plan was to take-on the entire county with little stories about my personal experiences, as a newcomer, shopper, and senior citizen. However, I found myself so intrigued by Historical Downtown Oroville and the things and people who disclosed their favorite 4-letter word as also being SOLD. These groups of fascinating people met as The Downtown Business Association, Chamber of Commerce, FRESCA (senior citizen hangout), and informal, as well as formal settings, at Feather Falls Casino and Gold Country Casino.
If you have read my ramblings you have learned how I admire and respect the talent that gathers at regular intervals to perform and entertain at The Birdcage Theatre, State Theatre, Farmers Markets, and numerous local parks. (Dont forget about Concerts In the Park this summer, every Thursday evening through August.) The teachers are energetic and ever so eager to work with our children. Kathy Neal of Creative Arts and Miss Jenn of Stamp Your Feet Dance Studio are just two of the women (there are multiple others), who devote their time and skill to working with the children of Oroville. It has been amazing for me to have experienced the evolution of plays, from words to rehearsals, to perfection on stage.
Did you know The Princess and The Frog will star our children on July 31st at the State Theatre?
Did you know the Birdcage Theatre 2010/2011 seasons 1st presentation will be The Seven Year Itch? Its a comedy by George Axelroad, and is directed by two very talented young ladies. Raquel and Ana Pina (mother and daughter team). Opening Night is September 10th, 2010. Why not buy Season Tickets for Opening Night. (I am!) And I will be in Opening Night formal attire, San Francisco style. Please join us, and get your tickets early. Another thought? The Birdcage Theatre is interested in performing for your fundraiser. You can reserve a Buy-Out now for a personal fun-filled night of exciting entertainment. What fun it is to laugh with friends and relatives …
Talking about the Birdcage Theatre—Carol Kitchen has just informed me that the I Wish program of teaching our children healthy habits is continuing, and the stars will be next years children. What a heart-warming display of talent appeared at The State Theatre earlier this year. Watch this paper for more information.
Since this will be my last column in The Digger, I cant help myself ... I have to remind you that I am not the only one in Oroville (or Butte County) that gets her kicks out of being a shop-aholic! SOLD is not a bad word. And, it really is my favorite 4 letter word, and I have met some great salespersons since coming here. I encourage you to learn how to say it properly and respectfully Some folks livelihoods depend on it.
It breaks my heart to say So Long, for now. But for now I must commit to my significant other, M. C. Baker. Hes the guy who has spent more than 30 years encouraging me to develop various talents, explore the world, and to be myself at all times. If you so desire, look for me on FACEBOOK. You know, that social network. Or in class. I will attempt to catch up on my computer skills, at least to the level of those wonderful grandchildren in the 3rd grade. Be Happy, Stay Happy and enjoy what you do.
della bacon The Newcomer, aka Candid Lady, often referred to as a BAT (Bay Area Transplant). Ohhhh, dont forget, I will continue to be downtown on First Fridays, attending events and, of course, Berry Creeks annual Berry Festival on August 14. (And I just might find the time to write an occasional column about some performance Ive attended or some upcoming event that Im excited about. Well see …)
Hope To See You Soon!
