PPAC Summer Theatre Camp, July 19-23, 2010
The nations largest touring childrens theatre is coming to Paradise. The Missoula Childrens Theatre (MCT) has been touring extensively for 37 years from Montana to Japan. It will visit nearly 1,300 communities this year with up to 45 teams of Tour Actor/Directors. The Paradise Performing Arts Center is proud to announce its new 2010 PPAC Summer Theatre Camp in collaboration with MCT. PPAC hopes it will become an annual event.
When MCT comes to Paradise this July, they will arrive with a set, lights, costumes, props and make-up; everything it takes to put on a play...except the cast. That is where the children of Paradise come in. The MCT team will hold an open audition on Monday, July 19th, and cast local students to perform in the production. The play to be presented here will be a musical version of the fairy-tale classic, Sleeping Beauty.
The week-long residency at the PPAC begins in the lobby on Monday, July 19 at 7:30 a.m. with the audition phase. At this time, fifty to sixty students—grades 1 through 12 will be cast. Among the roles to be cast are Sleeping Beauty, Scarella, Madame Butterfly, the King, the Queen, Spot, Fairies, Trolls, Palace Attendants and Caterpillars. No advance preparation is necessary. Assistant Directors also will be cast to aid in rehearsals and to take on essential backstage responsibilities. The local Team contacts for the camp will be Sandy and Stana Miller.
During the remainder of the week, lines will be learned and songs and choreography rehearsed on the PPAC stage. The final result will be a full-length musical with all the excitement of a Broadway opening. All shows are original adaptations of childrens stories and fairytales—a twist on the classic stories that you know and love. The performances will take place on Saturday, July 24 at 3:00 PM and again at 5:30 PM. Tickets are $10 and $7, and are available at the PPAC box office.
Also included in the residency are three enrichment workshops presented by the Tour Actor/Directors. Creativity, social skills, goal achievement, communication skills and self-esteem are all characteristics that are attained through participation in this unique, educational project. MCTs mission is the development of life skills in children through participation in the performing arts.
