Call Me the Newcomer

(by Della Bacon - June 28, 2010)

Oroville Seniors know how to have fun! Check them out at Gold Country Casino on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8 a.m. until 1 oclock. You think they go there just to gamble? Well, think again—just watch them ‘cut-a-rug. Whoopee!
Lunch at the Feather River Senior Center (FRSCA) has always been a fun place for lunch, Bingo, and Tuesdays, when The Band Played On ... The faces are familiar at the new location for lunch. Thats right, FRSCA gave up the lunch crowd so they could remodel the building in Historical Downtown Oroville, but Bingo plays on (thanks to Mary and Bonnie, and the awesome volunteers) and the winner is—the seniors!
The food is fantastic! The individual service is extraordinary. Everyone seems to enjoy the new location (across the driveway from The Sports Club), building and appreciate the entrees. Ooophs, except one—I took my friend there on Tuesday. He said, What happened to the bakery? We used to get cakes, pies, pastries, and goodies before lunch was served? He added, There is no disabled ramp leading to the front door for the disabled! How is that possible?
This is a under the direction of the Community Action Agency of Butte County. The Oroville Senior Nutrition Cafe relocated to Gold Town Plaza in May. The sign over the door reads,. Feather River Fresh Cafe & Bakery.
Remember, one has to make reservations ahead of time to all sites. Call 530-533-4571. The Senior Nutrition Program is sponsored by the Community Action Agency of Butte County. Home deliveries for homebound seniors is possible by calling 530-538 7534, ext. 245. Activities? Drop by and talk with Site Leads about future activities.
Remember to thank those good-looking young men who are now serving the meals, drinks, and goodies directly to the table. They want to learn how to be waiters, dishwashers, and cooks! Sponsored by the PIC (Private Industry Council) Program.
I spent Fathers Day with a great-grandfather. (No! I didnt say, my Great-Grandfather. I said, a Great Grandfather!) What an awesome experience. This man unlocked a dirty-brown, very old, rusty-trunk for me to view its contents. It held treasures from his own fathers possessions, which were shipped to France (1917) and back to Topeka, Kansas (1918), after WWI ended. All his gear was intact.
Clarence Eddy Baker, was a Sergeant in the United States Army (1917-1918). He was a teenager prepared to give his life for his country. Later, he helped to form American Legion Post 51 in Whittier, CA.
Buy your tickets early! Stamp Your Feet Performing Arts Centre ... Oroville has talent! Miss Jenn is doing it again—gathering the children of Oroville to perform The Princess and The Frog on stage at the State Theatre July 31st. They generally play to a full-house—parents, grandparents, and relatives come close to filling all seats. So get your tickets early.
The Downtown Business Association (DBA) will help celebrate a safe and sound 4th of July by giving important lessons about fireworks. You can join in the activities and even win a prize, by just being there! That is First Friday, July 2nd, in Historical Downtown Oroville.
What do you enjoy doing most? Have you thought about being a volunteer and greeting nice people? Everyone wants someone to help them out. Docents for the museums, and the local police need volunteers, as does FRSCA. Talk to me! Are you interested? If not, why not? It is one way we keep our brain and body active. Thats right, I said, Active. Why?
I just completed a wonderful course offered by the YMCA called The Brain Agility Program. It is a 7-week class that meets weekly. Call the YMCA for more information and dates of the next class. (530-533-9622). I found the excercises to be fascinating, and the information on nutrition to be encouraging. I also got acquainted with other seniors who were interested in preserving their brain. It was fun and informative.
If you are just visiting our town, check out the museums. (Pick up a Visitors Guide at the Chamber office.) Oroville has talent, but they also respect and love their history. Who said that? Me, The Newcomer, ready and willing to learn more. You can email me: della@diggernews.com or drop me a note at the local Digger Shopper & News office at 2057 Mitchell. I am honestly and truly ‘new to town. della b. THE NEWCOMER
