City Sets Weed Abatement Example

A combined effort is underway by the City of Oroville Parks & Trees and Public Works Departments to remove overgrown vegetation on City owned property that could present a fire threat as weeds continue to rapidly grow from the extended rainy season.
The City departments, along with crews from Cal-Fire and the Private Industry Council have been diligently clearing an extensive area adjacent to Oro Dam Blvd. near the airport. Piles of mowed and cleared vegetation have been staged for pick up and removal. The crews are also working in the Argonaut Flood Detention Basin and areas adjacent to Deer Creek off of Table Mountain Blvd.
Last month, efforts included clearing the Feather River levee facing the historic downtown district and individual city-owned parcels along Montgomery Street. The City, on an annual basis, clears weeds that are twelve inches or higher and other dead, decayed, diseased or hazardous trees that could be a potential fire threat. When possible the crews remove the cut vegetation to eliminate fuel.
Residents are reminded that they must do the same thing on private property. Notices were recently sent to over 300 locations that were identified by the City Fire Department as potential fire threats requesting that the properties be cleared by June 15th. It is recommended that weeds and dry grass be cut before 10:00 A.M. when the humidity is higher and temperatures are cooler to reduce the chance of igniting a fire. Visit the Cal-Fire website www.fire.ca.gov for information about fire prevention. Additional questions may be directed to the Oroville Fire Department at (530) 538-2481
