Summer Camps at Gateway Science Museum

BIRDS, BUGS, AND HABITATS
Session 1 June 14-17, Session 3 July 12-15 (girls only session)
Discovery is the key to creating a fun learning experience. From life in the leaf litter to wildlife in the tree canopy, each day we will investigate different habitats. Through observation, field collection, and hands-on activities, well explore characteristics about each habitat and how it provides food, water, shelter, and a safe place for wildlife to raise young. Project activities include design and construction of bird feeders, investigation of native plant habitats, and experiments using museum gardens. Discover hidden environments where you might not normally look - in leaf litter, compost, and along stream banks.
CREEKSIDE DISCOVERY Session 2 June 21-24
Session 4 July 19-22
As a junior scientist, you will explore the riparian communities along Big Chico Creek on the CSU, Chico campus. From collecting macro invertebrates living in the creek to examining the plants, trees, and wildlife that live alongside Big Chico Creek, you will discover the important role of riparian communities in the local natural landscape. Project activities include examining creek environments and the plants and animals that occupy those habitats, making paper, and using a plant press for preserving the specimens you collect.
