Call Me The Newcomer
(by Della Bacon - May 17, 2010)
Do you take your life, your community, your friends for granted? I mean do you just expect everything and everyone to be the same as when you were first introduced? I just realized I have only lived in Oroville a couple of years and because I already had a couple copies of THE SOURCE, a yearly publication about our community, I didnt pick-up a new copy for this year. Wow! When I did, I discovered eye-opening information. My gosh! Its a local telephone book! Do you get your information from the 2010 newly published Source? It is all about Oroville. Eye-opening information with local telephone numbers and all local businesses.
The Source does not come to you in the mail. It isnt left on your doorstep each year like a big, heavy, commercial telephone book. However, it is available at banks and at The Digger office (even at some local businesses, service stations, and grocery stores). It has sure made my life easier in locating people, places, and things right here in Oroville.
A new class graduates every year, not just from high school or college, but they also graduate from Day Care, Primary School, as well as dancing centers to become entertainers on stage! Remember, Oroville Has Talent! and often the talented ones began entertaining at our local private schools. Did you guess what I am referring to? Of course, it is Kathy Neals and Miss Jenn at Stamp Your Feet Dance Studio. That is where the talented ones of tomorrow are coming from.
What is it about women that makes them want to clean in the Spring. Mother did it! Grandma did it! And now, I religiously do it!. Does it have to do with Day Light Savings Time? Seeing the gorgeous flowers begin to bloom on a sunny day? The anticipation of out-of-town guests who come dressed in their best attire for family get-to-gathers? Is this when your best china, lovely linens, and shiny silver is set out on the table? Or do you dress-down in jeans and a funky tee-shirt? Could it be the guys have all gone fishing? And those of us who stay at home, have time on our hands? I know that when the puddles have disappeared and the sun is shining through the windows, I am inclined to get out in the garden. It is then I want to clean those dirty windows.
My moods seem to reflect current weather conditions. Walking my companion-pet, The Duchess, energizes me. The nicer the weather, the longer the walks. When we return home, The Duchess sleeps. I feel more energetic, and usually clean, clean, clean the house. Or get down and dirty in the garden.
Just like a clean house, I adore a clean car. My car is my home away from home. And for some strange reason, when I see a chip in the paint, a missing hub cap, or stuff laying all over inside, I get cranky. Today, I spend more time checking out the car, than I ever did checking out my childrens playroom. The Duchess and the car are my main priorities. It seems one or the other manage to take a hunk out of my monthly paycheck. What to do? Oh No! I cant survive without either of them, so dont even think get rid of them! Besides, The Duchess is proudly wearing her new Butte County SPCA License. That gives her the right to live with me and walk in town (on a leash), as long as I carry a doggy bag for her deposits. (Remember, one of my pet-peeves is Pet-Owners who dont pick up after their pets.)
The Arc is full of gently used treasures and open 7 days a week. It doesnt matter if you are window shopping or in serious need of a small appliance, you will find it there, along with good books, beautiful clothing (in all sizes), and musical instruments as well. I love their coffee and now drop by for a snack between my shopping sprees. They not only pick up donations, they will deliver your purchases of larger items. Service is always with a smile.
Talking about music, Housers Music on Bird Street not only carries musical instruments and an abundance of sheet music, they provide qualified teachers for every imaginable instrument. One of my neighbors even arranged for in-home instructions on her harp.
Coyote Clothing Company is owned and operated by Donna Jones. It is located in the newly remodeled building at 1346 Myers Street, where Corkins Crossing once occupied. The fashions are excitingly hep.
The grand opening of Pat Alley Memorial Dog Park is scheduled for Saturday, May 29th. Bring your pet to check it out, its at the entrance of Riverbend Park on Salmon Run Road. There will be a doggy parade and vendor booths. Also, a low-cost vaccine clinic will be available to update your pets vaccinations, to keep them safe.
On Monday, May 31st, the American Legion is having a Memorial Day Service and Barbecue, to honor those who fought for our freedom. Where? Memorial Park Cemetery and the Veterans Hall.
The Birdcage Theatre presents Moon Over Buffalo opening Friday, May 28th. To entice you to get out and about over Memorial Weekend, the Birdcage is offering discount tickets (two for the price of one) and refreshments. Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30. Sunday matinee 2 p.m. Call 533-BIRD for more information.
