Call Me The Newcomer

(by Della Bacon - April 26, 2010)

They arent shy, they tell it as it is … The Fun Starts Here! Where? In Oroville, of course! It is a small, historical town, with a big heart, a lot of pride, and massive talent. Oroville loves company. To prove it, the Downtown Business Association keeps everyone busy doing their thing!
You ask, What thing? For beginners, historic Downtown Oroville celebrates the First Friday of every month, doing entertaining in a different manner each and every month. Most often each individual store hosts an Open House, serving refreshments, handing out small gifts, and/or by having a Blow-Out sale of selected merchandise. And when it is First Friday in downtown Oroville, theres usually music in the streets. It is Orovilles great monthly hospitality day.
For Orovilles big hospitality week, they call it Feather Fiesta Days. Childrens parade is on Friday, May 7th. The grown-ups have their huge parade on Saturday, May 8th. Check The Digger to learn more about the week—Beerfest, Chinese Temple Tea & Open House, Craft Show in Sank Park, the car show—well the list goes on and on.
Just to let you know, Elegant Elouise, of Day Dreams Gift Shop, has returned from her annual-winter vacation in Arizona. She promises that new merchandise has arrived, and plans to be open on Friday and Saturdays.
Corkins Crossing has put a new saddle in the window. Dont just stand there and gawk, go inside and meet a very special lady with extraordinary taste. Call her by name, Hi there, Donna Jones! She and a beautiful young lady, known as her daughter, will be running the store. I asked Donna how she would describe the style of clothing and she said, It is modern and artistic!
My Babys Closet has moved from Myers and Park Avenue to Myers next door to the Coffee Diem Coffee Shop. Coffee Diem is a skip and a jump from Sierra Gem Company, which is a great place to get a lovely gift for that special someone for Mothers Day!
Have you strolled inside of Nookies on Montgomery Street, by the big clock? I understand it is a lingerie and bedroom store. Rosy Cheeks is coming to town. What? Its all about babies. I was sad to learn my favorite radio station moved from Bird Street. But understand they are delighted to be in their new quarters near Olive Highway.
INDULGE? What is Indulge and how does one do it, you ask? From what I can see, it is furniture, accessories, gift items, and refurbished vintage furniture into modern day decor for any one who loves new ideas. Prices are very reasonable.
There is a new motorcycle shop in our town. Check out Huntoon Street and talk to Jimmy Evans or Kurt Kellman.
Private Industry Council is working over-time to train future retailers. They recently opened Emporio (in the old McMahan Building) on Bird Street, and they are still training our young people at the Kitchen and Gift Shop on Myers and Bird, as well as training the servers and cooks at Checkers Italian Restaurant. Lets support the efforts of all these people who care enough to teach new trades and interests.
Ah yes, cant forget David Neilsen. He has opened an Edward Jones Investment office on Bird Street. The Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting is scheduled for May 6th.
Did I see you at the Birdcage Theatre last Friday? It was Opening Night for the newest play: Cocktail Hour, starring Mike Williams, Bill and Carole Falcon and Bethanie Johns, directed by Ruby Thomas. If you missed the opening, dont miss this coming weekend. It is a delicious, chuckle-filled comedy with great acting!
Bidwell Bar Day is this Saturday May 1st from 12 to 4 p.m. It is one of those freebies for families, visitors and locals. One gets a chance to pan for gold, get involved with craft-making, eat good food, listen to old-time music, and/or watch videos about the area. Go out to the Visitors Center, and I promise you, They will point you in the right direction!
Vernon Carter, President of the Optimist Club, was so proud of the Oroville High Schools Essay Contest winners, that he and wife Beverly wanted to share this info with me. Here it is: First Place: Trevor Bidwell received $150. Second Place: Seth Harvey, received $100. Third Place: Bryanne Arrequin won $50. Congratulations to all of you. The Optimist Club meets at Cornucopia every other Thursday at noon.
Reminder: The I Wish production have scheduled only one matinee for the public. Thats Saturday, May 15th at 2 oclock at the historic State Theatre, in downtown Oroville.
The stars are the children, dancers, singers, and dreamers. The only adult is Jill Farris, a Volunteer Youth Coordinator at Oroville Hospital who will play the role as Grown-Up, Dream-Keeper. Ferris is a member and the Vice-President of Artists of Rivertown. Their gallery is just a few doors up the street from State Theatre, next door to Copa De Oro.
I start a Brain Agility Class at the YMCA this week. Maybe my next column will show me as more agile, and not so fragile. I want to thank Mugshots for cluing me into the Wi Fi and allowing me to bug your customers. And, I do love those original paintings you have on display!
Well gotta go … sure would like to hear from you. If I goofed, tell me! Write to: della@diggernews.com. If you like reading this column, tell THE BOSS (at Boss Burgers). Believe me, my boss, David Miller, will get the message and THE BOSS will get your business. Even good news gets around our town!
