Exciting Hiking Schedule for March

Wildflower Hike in Sutter Buttes
Saturday, March 6 & Sunday March 28
Come on a hike through the Sutter Buttes and witness the finest wildflower display in many years. The six-hour excursion will trek atop the Propylite Hills. Propylite is decomposed volcanic rock that forms rounded hills. With an 800-foot elevation gain the tour will proceed at a moderate pace to relish a wide-variety of views. Participants will witness rugged peaks and bucolic valleys; unencumbered vista of the northern Sacramento Valley and magnificent Braggs Canyon. The trip includes instruction on Sutter Buttes geology, history and the mountains unique biological community.
Cost is $15 for Yuba Historical Society members and $25 for non-members. Membership price begins at $15.
Walk around Sutter Buttes Half Dome

On this moderate hike participants will circumnavigate Cat Rock, a volcanic half dome ascending 500? above Peace Valley, an interior basin on the Buttes? northern flank. The 5-½ hour walk begins with a trek through a lush Bay Laurel grove followed by a geology talk, then an ascent up a 300? hill. We end up at the shoulder of Cat Rock to enjoy a close up view of the mountains shear walls. Walking around the back of Cat Rock anticipate a grand panorama of the northern Sacramento Valley. The excursion ends with a visit to an ancient Indian encampment. Expect to see beautiful wildflower displays plus birds such as Phainopepla, Canyon Wrens and Bald Eagles.

Ridge Walk and Wildflowers in Sutter Buttes

Join an energetic climb near center of the Sutter Butte volcano on Yuba Historical Societys Ridge Walker Delight hike. This 6-½ hour excursion begins with a climb out of the largest canyon in the Buttes to a 1600? ridge where hikers will have lunch gazing upon one of the longest views in California. On a clear day we will see Mt. Shasta to the north, Mt. Diablo to the south, Mt. Konocti on the western horizon, and the Chrystal Range ringing Lake Tahoe to the east. After lunch we trek westward atop a mile long ridge with stunning vistas in every direction, an added attraction will be an impressive display of early wildflowers all along the route.
Cost is $35 for Yuba Historical Society members and $45 for non-members. Membership price begins at $15.
