First Friday in March Features Famous Women
Downtown Oroville will be celebrating in March as part of Women’s History Month with more than twenty downtown businesses featuring window or in-store displays of their chosen woman. Many of the businesses have chosen world famous women including Jackie Kennedy, Amelia Earhart, Audrey Hepburn and Judy Garland. There will also be many local women celebrated including Freda Ehmann, mother of the California ripe olive process and founder of the Ehmann Olive Co., Mattie Lund, Butte County Treasurer and Tax collector for 50 years and May Thomas, Postmistress of Cherokee and clerk at Oroville Post Office.
This year is the 30th anniversary of the National Women’s History Project with the theme “Writing Women Back into History.” In 1987 this group petitioned congress to expand the Women’s History Week designation to the entire month of March. Since then, the National Women’s History Month Resolution has been approved every year.
The kickoff to Downtown Oroville’s celebration is First Friday, March 5, with many businesses open until 7 p.m. or later. Everyone is invited to visit throughout the month and enjoy the celebration of women.
