Countywide Celebrations - 90th Anniversary of 19th Amendment & L
The Butte County Chapter of the League of Women Voters, joined by countywide womens educational and service groups, invite you to join them in celebrating the 90th anniversary of the passage of the Womens Right to Vote, which is also the Leagues 90th anniversary.
They are sponsoring student/teacher discussion groups in various county venues, as well as a series of formal teas, which will feature the movie, Iron Jawed Angels, with a discussion to follow.
Iron Jawed Angels is a moving historical account of the brave women of the womens suffrage movement in Britain and the United States. Through tireless campaigning, non-violent protests, political imprisonment, hunger strikes, starvation, indignity, and even death for some, the suffragettes showed undeniable bravery in the face of oppression and abuse. Their bravery helped secure womens voting rights and the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, and also inspired the non-violent, equal rights protest movements of both Ghandi and Martin Luther King, Jr.
This is a part of American history that is not always explored in depth in classrooms or largely known by the general public. It is a fascinating and moving part of our history, and celebrates the strength and fortitude women have brought to the ongoing struggle for equality, worldwide.
Doris Petterson from American Association of University Women, Gridley Branch and Eileen Burke-Trent with League of Women Voters, Butte County will lead the discussion on the implications and historical impacts of this non-violent political protest, and the politics behind the process. There will also be a pictorial and book display to honor these anniversaries.
The formal teas/movie/discussion for the general public will be held in Gridley on Sunday, February 21 from 2-5 p.m. at the Gridley Library (299 Spruce St.) with assistance from the American Association of University Women and the Gridley Friends of the Library. In Chico on Sunday, March 7 from 2-5 p.m. at the Chico Womens Club (592 E. 3rd St.) with assistance from many Chico womens groups. In Oroville on Sunday, March 21 from 2-5 p.m. at the Ehmann Home (corner of Lincoln/Robinson) with assistance from the Oroville chapter of American Association of University Women and the Butte County Historical Society.
