Rice and Waterbirds Workshop, February 5, 2010

Please join us for the “Rice and Waterbirds Workshop” on February 5th, 2010 This workshop, sponsored by the California Rice Commission, Audubon California, PRBO Conservation Science and The Nature Conservancy, will build upon a workshop held last year with rice growers in the Sacramento Valley.  The goal is to engage local rice growers, natural resource agencies and conservation organizations to identify specific opportunities and constraints to implementing rice field management practices that enhance the value of rice fields for waterbirds.
The workshop will include:
· A review of what is known and unknown about rice field characteristics that are likely to benefit waterbirds;
· An open discussion of several specific alternative management options that may enhance the habitat value of rice fields for waterbirds and what experiments are needed to test these;
· A discussion of potential funding and incentive programs that can be used to enhance the habitat value of ricelands, while compensating for cost of implementing those practices.
This workshop is intended to be an interactive discussion that will shape research and implementation of practices over the next several years. This workshop would benefit from your involvement and so we hope you can be there.  If you will be able to attend, please RSVP to Alex Hartman (chartman@audubon.org) or Rodd Kelsey (rkelsey@audubon.org) ASAP.
