Pacific Flyway Art Exhibition Opens January 22, 2010

The Uptown/Downtown Pacific Flyway Art Exhibition opens January 22 and runs through February 7, 2010 as a key part of Chico’s annual Snow Goose Festival.  Photographers, painters and sculptors will display expressive images of Pacific Flyway geese, herons, ducks, egrets, swans and other birds within alluring local habitats. Two galleries, Avenue 9 Gallery & Art Guild (Uptown) and The Artistry at All Fired Up! (Downtown) will host the exhibit.  A free “Sneak Preview” takes place Saturday, January 23 from 5:30-8:30pm. On Friday January 29, 5:30-8:30pm the formal reception occurs, complete with wine and food (Bacio Catering) and live jazz (Shigemi Minetaka and Nathan Furgason at The Artistry; Greg and Barbara D’Augelli at Avenue 9). The Chico trolley transports participants between galleries. The formal reception cost is $10/adult, $5/youth Reservations can be made on line (www.snowgoosefestival.org).
Now in its fourth year, the Uptown-Downtown Pacific Flyway Art Exhibit has grown from a casual affair with pictures propped on easels in a recreation center to the present professionally mounted show of work by twenty-six artists from as far away as Chile. Jurors were Christina Aranguren (widely acclaimed local artist), Jackie Ferrier (biologist at the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge), Mike Fisher (naturalist and co-vice president of the Altacal Audobon Society), Jennifer Patten (co-founder and coordinator of the Snow Goose Festival and co-vice of the Altacal Audobon Society), Maria Phillips (artist, art historian and owner of Avenue 9 Gallery & Art Guild), Sue Scott (art and nature lover, long-time birder and member of the Snow Goose art committee), and Darah Votaw (artist and co-owner of The Artistry at All Fired Up!). Jurors’ Commendations will be announced at the opening reception. In addition, the galleries are hosting the very popular People’s Choice Awards (one for each gallery). To enrich the viewing experience Jackie Ferrier has provided excellent interpretive material for the labels. This is a must-see for Chico residents and visitors.
