Martin Luther King Day Commemoration, January 18, 2010
On Monday, January 18, 2010, a program of music, song and spoken word commemorating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and celebrating his dream of peace and equality will be presented at the Paradise United Methodist Church. The community is invited to this free event, an annual presentation sponsored by the Paradise Center for Tolerance and Nonviolence (PCTN). The program begins at 7:00 pm, preceded by a candlelight walk at 6:30 pm.
The musical program promises to uplift and entertain, with performances by the Paradise United Methodist Church Choir, the Doin It Justice Choir and Lazy Lester Johnson.
A special focus this year will be the Freedom Summer of 1964, when students joined with civil rights workers in Mississippi to register voters and to set up and teach at Freedom Schools for African-American youth. Paradise resident, Karen Duncanwood, will speak about her personal experience in Mississippi that summer. Paradise High School students will read testimonial letters written by other Freedom Summer volunteers. Surrounded by acts of violence, these freedom workers fulfilled the words of Dr. King, Nonviolence is a powerful and just weapon which cuts without wounding and ennobles the man who wields it. It is a sword that heals.
The Paradise United Methodist Church is located at 6722 Clark Road. Candles will be provided for the candlelight walk. The audience is also invited to gather after the program for fellowship and light refreshments. For more information, contact PCTN at 530-877-1856 or email pctn@sbcglobal.net.
