Birdcage Theatre Presents "An Evening of One Acts"
Opening at Birdcage Theatre on January 15th is An Evening of One Acts. This will be great fun in that it includes three different plays: “The Scent,” a drama, “I Don’t Smoke,” a comedy/drama and “Lost,” a comedy.
“Lost” is a charming and hilarious one-act play written by Mary Louise Wilson (b.1931 -). Besides writing, directing, and co-starring in “Lost,” Ms. Wilson has won prestigious awards and accolades for her other work in stage, film, and television.
This Birdcage Theatre production has been deftly directed by Mindy Rose Kubik. Ms Kubik previously directed the Case of the Lost Lott as part of Oroville’s annual celebration of Perry Mason Days. Over the years, she has also served as assistant director for multiple successful Birdcage productions.
Susan Eisenberg and Barbara Jeanne Daggett co-star in “Lost.” Both actresses have been honored with Birdie awards for their acting in previous plays. Barbara is our webmistress (www.birdcagetheatre.net) and also a very active member of Birdcage’s board of directors. Besides acting, Susan has directed, stage managed, handled technical tasks, and volunteered in various other efforts to support the Birdcage.
“Lost” is one peculiar day in the lives of two close friends. As they careen together on life’s roller coaster, the audience will probably recognize familiar situations that resonate with their own experience.
NOTE: This show is in no way related to the popular TV show by the same name.
“The Scent” and “I Don’t Smoke” are original plays, written and directed by Carol A. Kitchen. They are both based on real people and real events, presented in a fictionalized fashion.
One very fun thing about these two plays is the cast range in age from five years old to eighty-six years, and includes a four-legged actress, Angel Pass who charms and warms the stage with a doggie smile and a wag of the tail.
“The Scent” is a poignant story about a man struggling against the inevitability of life’s cycle and how to let go and say good-bye.
In “The Scent,” Angel Pass is the charming four-legged actress (dog) who is playing two roles, the role of GIbbers and Lacy. On stage with her will be Alex Pass (age 5) and his brother, Anthony Pass, age 8. (They are pictured in the front cover photo taken by Tonya Paul.) All three are on stage for the first time.
Denise Perri, who was McMurphy in Who Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest last season won the “Birdie Award” for the best male actor and is the Lead in “The Scent.”
John Williams, who plays the doctor in “The Scent,” was memorable in his portrayal of Scalin, the bomb toting patient playing along side Denise Perri in Who Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. Traded from patient to doctor.
“I Don’t Smoke” is a coming of age story about a woman in her fifties, facing the prospect of life as a single woman after over thirty years of marriage. Featured in this production is JC Newport and Howard Moore.
Tickets are available at Discount Books or at the Birdcage Theatre, 1740 Bird Street, immediately before the performance.
