The Newcomer

First Friday, December 4, 2009: ‘Tis The Season To Be Jolly in Historical Downtown Oroville.  It all begins this Friday when most stores will be lit up and holding an Open House in anticipation of Santa Claus’ arrival. He’ll be coming by way of Wells Fargo Stagecoach to Bird & Myers Streets at 3:30 p.m. Come early, bring the kiddies, plan to get in the Holiday Spirit.  Photographs with the Wells Fargo Stagecoach at Wells Fargo Advisers can be taken between 3:45 and 4:15. Professional photographers will be available for a picture with Santa Claus at Creative Imaging Center on Montgomery Street and/or with Tonya Paul, after 4 p.m. at the State Theatre.
Afterwards head to Feather River Senior Center (FRSCA) on Myers Street. There you will find plenty of grandmothers, grandfathers, aunts, uncles and The Boy’s & Girl’s Club of Oroville, all willing to help your youngster build a Gingerbread House, to take home and display.
Christmas Carolers will be going from business to business, entertaining and spreading cheer in the Spirit of Christmas, after 5:30 p.m.
Don’t forget to stick around for the Community Tree Lighting Ceremony in front of the Municipal Auditorium at 7 o’clock.
-------------------------------------------------------
Saturday, December 5th: There will be no Farmer’s Market; instead, check out The Seventh Annual Holiday Craft Faire, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.  This function is put on by our local radio station, KRBS, at the Municipal Auditorium.  There is no charge to look, but be prepared to want everything you see.  More than 50 vendors from all over Northern California will be there with beautiful, natural, and timely, Christmas decorations and gift items, suitable for the entire family. When was the last time you gave or received a memorable locally-made or produced gift? You’ll likely find that special something at this event. There will be live music, Giggles The Clown and a snack bar, catered by Checkers. This colorful indoor event is a “must see” for locally hand-crafted items, perfect for gifts or home use. Please note, this event is a KRBS Fundraiser, and is co-sponsored by Feather River Recreation & Parks District. Your attendance and purchases will help to keep our own radio station KRBS on the air.  KRBS (107.8) supports Oroville and all the surrounding communities. In cooperation with local colleges, future announcers, musicians, and story-tellers made their debut on the air with KRBS.

“What are we doing tonight, my Love? How about going out for dinner in Historical Downtown Oroville, then dropping by The Bird Cage Theatre—my treat?” Oh My, My My…if I received an invitation like that, I would jump at it!   December promises to be the best month of the year to view, see, and enjoy, not only local talent on stage, but local writers, directors, musicians, sound, stage designers, and true artists doing their thing, behind the stage! Hey kids, that’s our neighbors, friends, and their children. They are the locally grown, or new talent that came to our town and decided to stay. I love them. You will love them, too! And what a wonderful group they are!  Don’t stand them up. Make it a Date. I’ll be there, in costume.
“Cliff’s End” is an old-fashioned ghost story, written by local writer, Anna DeVore. Opening night is December 4th. and will run through December 20th. Is this a Halloween Treat in December? You gotta see it to believe it! You must remember Anna DeVore—she wrote and directed the wonderful adaption of “Media,” last season.

Did you know? The new Bella’s Gift and Clothing store is in the process of moving to larger quarters, right next door to Day Dreams, whose owner, Elegant Elouise, is open for Christmas & Holiday shopping on Fridays, and Saturdays.  Fuzion is in the process of being set up in  Afternoon Delights’ previous location. Where is our famous Kay, owner of Afternoon Delights? She has merely moved up the block, across the street from Artists of Rivertown Gallery, which is next door to the Feather River Kitchen & Gifts. “Do you ever stop and chat with Andy?” He’s at the Mercantile Store, and has a variety of interesting merchandise. It’s always changing. I love coffee and special treats at Per Diem. Next door is Sierra Gem,—who can pass it by. You can’t possibly go downtown without stopping at Scoops for lunch, gelato, ice cream or a quickie snack. Check out the window display at “What To Wear,” then go inside. The new Owners have splurged to bring in more inventory and gift items for your lady or lady friends, Mom and others. Have your candy for Christmas? The Lighthouse Candy Shoppe is there for your pleasure on Bird Street.  New stores are coming in on a nearly weekly basis. If business isn’t great, it’s your fault. Our well-known City Councilwoman and President of the Downtown Business Association, Sue Corkin, proprietor of Gallery Interiors has exclusive decor for the home, windows, and custom accessories to delight the most meticulous homemaker. The Shirt Shack—call them early and have them print a special something for a young man, woman, or teen.  I love it! De Ma Ma’s has a new owner and operator, who is on duty to help you plan something special for Ma Ma’s to be, and/or newly-borns.  As a Grandma, I find it to be a special treat. Far more personable than a department store, and everything is competitively priced. A couple of truly unique stores are Oldies But Goodies, and Mary Lake-Thompson’s, both on Montgomery Street.
