The Newcomer

(by Della Bacon - November 23, 2009)

This is the time of the year, when family, friends, neighbors and out-of-towners gather to enjoy a hearty Thanksgiving.  It is also that time of the year, where folks like us begin to prepare for Christmas, by locating exceptional bargains.  So, when you have had enough turkey and feel rested, why not get up, and go out and about in Oroville.
Are you a musical family? Check out Houser’s Music on Bird Street; they are having a gigantic sale of musical instruments.  No need to take your sleeping bag, and stay out all night. You won’t even have to fight the crowds, since store hours are from 10 a.m to 3 p.m. They will have something for every musician and want-to-be musician on your list.
Did you know that Comp-U-Bytes has moved to another location.  That’s right.  You’ll find them next to FKO, Oroville Cycle and Rick’s Subs on Oro Dam Blvd.  What happened to Bill’s Oroville Tool and Supply?  They, too, have moved to 2545 7th Avenue, and are holding a fantastic tool sale. Check it out, and tell them The Newcomer sent you.
The “Fun Starts Here...” Where? In Historical Downtown Oro Ville, of course!  Whoever came up with that slogan, should be acknowledged with numerous awards.  Why?  Because it is true.  A visit to downtown is always an exciting, fun adventure.  Between the efforts of the Downtown Business Association, (DBA) and Oroville’s Chamber of Commerce, there is always something special going on to entice families and friends to meet, greet, and enjoy!  The First Friday of each month one can enjoy Historical Downtown at its best.  Check out what’s in store for First Friday, December 4th, 2009 ... “Spirit of Christmas.”
All downtown businesses will host an Open House, and serve refreshments at their place of business.  Yes, the famous Wells Fargo Stagecoach will deliver Santa Claus to Bird & Myers Streets around 3:30 pm.  A very special Open House for children and grandchildren will be held at the Senior Center (FRSCA), on Myers Street, from 3:30 to 6:45.  Under the supervision and direction of Oroville’s Boys and Girls Club, your children will have the opportunity of participating in building a Gingerbread House.
What about pictures with Santa?  You bet.  Professional photographers will be available at several locations: Creative Imaging at 2061 Montgomery Street (4-6 p.m.) and our dearly loved Tonya Paul at the State Theatre, 1489 Myers (4-6 p.m.).  Also on Robinson Street in front of Wells Fargo Advisors (3:45-4:15 p.m.).
Free rides on a horse-drawn carriage will board on Montgomery Street, at the clock, across from the Municipal Parking lot, and almost in front of The Golden Poppy, coffee house, and Oldies But Goodies.  There will be an abundance of Christmas Carolers, starting at 5:30 and of course, Oroville’s Community Tree Lighting Ceremony will be in front of the Municipal Auditorium around 7 p.m.

Santa’s elves have been working over-time to help you celebrate one of the best Christmases ever—Saturday, December 5th the 7th Annual Holiday Craft Faire will be at the Municipal Auditorium.  More than 50 crafters will display and sell their creations.  Admission is Free.  Come early:  10 a.m. and stay late—until 5 p.m.  This is a special fund-raiser for our local radio station, KRBS.
A Christmas Celebration Concert by Oroville Community Chorus and Concert Band will perform at the State Theatre, Saturday December 5th at 7:30 p.m., and again Sunday, December 6th at 3:30 p.m.  Tickets are $10.

Congratulations Bob Buskirk, President of Oro Dam Cruisers.  Rumor has it The Downtown  Business Association (DBA) recognized you, as being top-dog and enthusiastic supporter of the DBA and Historical Downtown Oroville, at their annual Christmas Party.  You deserve the acknowledgment and recognition for all your hard work and dedication.  I heard you have always been “Johnny on-the-spot,” when it comes to supporting DBA and gathering your group together, on short notice.
----------------------------------------------
Oroville’s annual Light Parade is scheduled for Saturday December 12th at 6 p.m. sharp.  This year the parade will travel 7 blocks - Montgomery, Lincoln, Bird and Downer Streets.  Stores will be open before and after the parade.  It’s another fun day for the family, so be sure to mark your calendar, and come early to get a good spot.  The Judges’ stand will be at the corner of Bird and Myers Streets.

Yep, it looks like an exciting month ahead.  My gold hat is off to all the fantastic folks who dedicate their time and services to our downtown.  If you are bored, or want something else to do...check out the days and times when the museums will be open.  The docents, greeters and elves work over-time to keep themselves informed of Oroville’s fabulous history.  Drop me a line, when you have time, and let me know where you went, and what you saw.  della@diggernews.com
