LWV Sponsors Northstate Water Forum in Chico, November 12, 2009
California Water Plan and Statewide Drought Planning managers will be guest speakers at the 3rd annual water forum hosted by the League of Women Voters of Butte County.
This free public forum and workshop, titled “California Water Plan - 2009 Update: The Sacramento Hydrologic Region and Plans for Our Water,” will take place on Thursday, November 12th from 1:00 – 6:00 pm at the Masonic Family Center, 1110 W. East Ave. in Chico.
State law requires the California Water Plan to be updated every five years. This year’s plan is required to integrate with California’s Flood Plan and Global Warming issues, and the process is further complicated by concerns about the state’s third consecutive year of drought.
As Manager of Statewide Water Planning, Kamyar Guivechi has coordinated the state’s Department of Water Resources staff work and the participation of agencies, stakeholders and the public in the updates of the California Water Plan, both in 2005 and with this current effort of 2009. He was recently appointed as Manager, Division of Statewide Integrated Water Management, and his 31 years with DWR have given him a unique perspective on the water issues perplexing Californians.
Wendy H. Martin has nearly 30 years experience working on a wide range of water policy issues in California. As an Executive Project Manager and Statewide Drought Coordinator with DWR, she is now involved with issues ranging from current water conditions, planning for long term drought and how climate change makes everything different. Ms. Martin will tackle the topic of “Preparing for a Dry 2010.”
Following the presentations, there will be a workshop to engage the public on topics as diverse as the Delta Conveyance, Surface Storage, Urban & Ag Water Use Efficiency, Salt & Salinity Management, Flood Risk Management, System Re-operation, Water Transfers, Cloud Seeding, Transoceanic Water Bags, and 17 other Water Management Strategies. This is the opportunity for north state residents to share what they know about our region and to explore which of these strategies will work (or not work) and where.
Pre-Final Drafts of the California Water Plan Update 2009 Regional Reports and Management Strategies are available online at http://www.waterplan.ca.gov/cwpu2009/index.cfm, and further information about the November 12 program can be found at http://www.lwvbuttecounty.org .
This free program is co-sponsored by the LWV from Plumas County and the Redding Area, Allan Fulton, UC Cooperative Extension, and Butte-Sutter Basin Area Groundwater Users. The event is open to the public, and light snacks will be provided.
