The Newcomer

(by Della Bacon - August 17, 2009)

Whats happening in ‘our town? It is overwhelming; where do I begin? Lets start in ‘Old-Town, or is it Down Town Oro Ville? (What a beautiful logo, shopping bag and promotional ideas ...) Congratulations to the Downtown Business Association, aka DBA and Oroville Chamber of Commerce, and those who have worked so diligently to promote the Historical Town of Oroville, California. I have said it before, and I will say it again, I Love You and am so happy you have welcomed me to this darling, quaint, unique and personal community. Gosh, no matter where I go, or what I do, there is someone who recognizes my ‘Eye! Can you believe it?
Well, maybe I exaggerated. The truth is, many of the folks who read this column on a regular basis have developed the talent of recognizing my sparkling, gold cap or the giant, golden purse, with the clock. Thank you for stopping me in the market, the drug store, at the casinos and your places of business. Guess what? Thats what I wanted you to do! Why else would I wear the cap or carry such a large purse, or grin from ear to ear when your eyes light up in recognition of my attire, or connect me to The Digger Shopper & News.
Keep it up. You, the readers of this column, are awesome, fun-loving and very, very, special. If I make a boo-boo in my column, I am grateful you made the call, wrote a letter, and/or e-mailed your opinion. Then I know for sure, you read it! (I mean the column and the paper.) I am happy to make the connection and do the correction. Oh my ...
Lots & lots of activity going on in Downtown Oroville: New store Bellas moved into Afternoon Delights small building, across from The Mercantile Store. New owners have added inventory to What To Wear(shoes, candles, and a larger variety of sizes.) Check it out ASAP.
How sweet it is ... Floors by Ray moved downtown, next to Scoops. The very famous La De Da on Bird Street is in the process of moving next to Roxys Golden Poppy (yummy). New Life Mission moved into a glass house, (I know its a glass house because I broke the showroom window, not on purpose.) New Life Mission has double the space and most likely more customers because they are now next to Rainbow Discount Bread Store, which is across the street from Orovilles Police Department, which is next to the Fire Department, and a few doors down from our very famous Library.
Who else is moving up, down, around, or across the street from someone? Evolve is happy in their new home on Huntoon and Montgomery. The 2010 Beauty Salon is back, fully staffed, and it is business as usual. One of my favorite adopted grandsons team, Oroville Skate Pirates, (Dylan Hilton). took first place in a recent Skate-Boarding contest. Congratulations!
Of course, Elegant Elouise is enjoying her retirement and still holding down her fort on Myers Street—thats Day Dreams. You dont have to look far for Afternoon Delights. This great little business of lingerie and home-made soaps, with great gifts for brides-to-be and famous lotions has moved a short block away, to larger quarters. Daughters are old enough to take on more responsibility. Mom, Kay, says she plans to teach ‘soap-making to the public. Watch this column for more information. Their new location is across the street from Copa De Oro, who is offering a fresh menu, romantic dinners and a full bar. They recently had a grand-opening celebration. (P.S. The Digger staff is crazy about their new quarter-pound, cheese-hamburger/w fries for under $4. Orovilles Artists of River Town is now located next to Copa De Oro. Check out their new window display—awesome. Our town has talent.
Coming soon Old Time Fiddlers Jam at the Municipal Auditorium. Mark your calendar for August 23rd, and then the 4th Sunday of each month. What a great treat! Young, old, and in-between will jam at the Auditorium on a regular basis.
Can you believe a real-live pipe organ is coming to the State Theatre. That will be wonderful. The State Theatre was originally built to accommodate a pipe organ. It requires a high ceiling and excellent acoustics—thats our State Theatre. Whoopee!
Dinner at Checkers on Thursday and Friday nights is exceptional. Sure would like to see them serve more local wines on those nights. Talking about Checkers Italian Restaurant, guess who I had lunch with on Monday? Oh well, I am going to tell you it was Rudy Marcozzi, you know, the jeweler? Monday is salad day at Checkers. Its a great place for family and friends. Try the lunch 5 days a week, dinner Thursday and Friday, before the theatre or your night out. O.K., I confess, Rudy Marcozzi and I were having lunch at different and separate tables. It just felt like he was a vegetarian, like me. That man was dining with his beautiful daughter and son-in-law. How sweet! I think that is a wonderful recommendation for good food, excellent service, and local people who patronize Checkers on Table Mountain Blvd.
What else is new, maybe not to you, but to me? Sunday Champagne Brunch at Lake View Restaurant, next to the golf course at Kelly Ridge. Prime Rib Special and more, and more, and more. Dancing, Karaoke at Kellys there with new managers, beautiful scenery, interesting people—an elegant, elegant, elegant experience. Come early, stay late, to feel pampered. I did!
Birdcage Theatre is working on The Odd Couple. Soon, The Monday Club and Perry Mason will be getting together. Lets support our local talent and businesses. They do it all for you. They share their talent and put forth all that effort to please you, me, and our house-guests and relatives. One way to support the talent in this town is to purchase season tickets (26th) and to attend their productions. When you go, when you buy, when you shop, please tell ‘em, I read it in The Digger Shopper & News.
Thats all for today folks ... Hope to see you downtown, at one of the local restaurants, or even one of the casinos. When you see me, please stop and chat ... E-Mail me: della@diggernews.com
