The Newcomer

(by Della Bacon - July 27, 2009)

Early in my professional career I learned not to drive a green car, wear green clothing, or decorate my office or home in green hues. Why? It is the color of money and can interfere with a client’s decision making! That is, if you are a salesperson, like my Dad and Granddad were in the olden days. O.K., I was young and absorbed.  But I did pitch that belief to sales associates years later, while they were in training, and hung on my every word.
I got excited a couple of years ago, when I heard there was a Green Line to follow to exciting places in and around Oroville.  I kept looking for it, but for me, it often faded away.  I wanted to follow the crowd, but kept getting lost.  Being somewhat superstitious, I convinced myself, “If it has to do with money (Green); it must not be the right thing to do”
Well, you can not imagine how deliriously happy I was when I learned there is a brand new Green Line. But, it isn’t green-green, like money or Christmas Trees. It is a refreshing lime green—easy on the eye-ball.
You bet, we stopped at the Visitor’s Center and acquired some great information about Lake Oroville and other State Parks. We loved the exhibits there, and met some volunteers and few State employees.  Everyone was so great and encouraging; we promised to return soon to see the videos of the development of Butte County.  They have some great ones (and there’s no charge to view them), but on this visit, we were on a time schedule.
From the Visitor’s Center we headed up to the Marina. Very interesting—lots of boats and houseboats. The lake seemed very low, but very blue, too. We were hungry by then. So I know you want to know where ate—at The Lakeview Restaurant at the Golf Course, of course? Great food. Fantastic service. Good company, and a very interesting interview with the new managers from Foster City, as well as other diners. But, that’s for my next column. Why don’t you visit Lakeview Restaurant at Kelly Ridge and tell me your experience?
I still would not suggest you take the drive alone or with your dog. (Mine gets spooked.) However, you should take someone with you to get the full impact of the trip. Take your time and plan to stop a lot. We did. It is an awesome journey, with twists and turns and plenty of places to stop. Believe me, “The Lime Line is easy to follow ...”
Oh my goodness, did I get scolded. I told everyone I needed their help in figuring out where to take my house-guest for her one meal out a day. Some comments from you were E-Mailed:
“Della, why didn’t you go to the Hauf Brau on 5th Avenue in the shopping center for lunch?”
“Della, take your friend to The Iron Gate across the street from the Oroville Library, for a great breakfast!”
“Della, our family loves Francisco’s Mexican Restaurant on Myers Street. It has been there for years and is family owned and operated.”
O.K. O.K., guys. I got your point. There just wasn’t enough time to try all of your suggestions, but my dear friend Jan tells me she will be back soon. So please keep informing me of your favorite restaurants.  Summer’s not over, and I will be entertaining more guests soon.
There are so many things to do and see around Oroville this next week, how can we possibly get it all in one column? I’m telling you, if you don’t mark your calendars now, you’ll forgot!
The Annual Bridal Affair will be held at The Gold Country Casino  from 11 a.m.- to 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 2nd. It is only a $5 admission, but there is no cost to sample local wines and enjoy the hors d’oeuvres. It is a Bridal and Hair Styling Fashion Show. Even if you are not getting married, get out there and check it out!  There will be an abundance of local vendors and folks ready, willing and able to help you plan your next party.
The Birdcage Theatre is rehearsing for “The Odd Couple” with a twist, and many laughs. This time the women rule. My thought, “Many a truth was said in jest. It could happen to me; it could have already happened to you.” More on this subject, as information becomes available.
It’s Berry Festival time. I can smell the aroma of berry pie as I write. Over 700 berry pies are being baked for your enjoyment. But that’s not all. It is a party like none other.  It is the annual small community effort for fun and fund-raising. I went last year and had a tremendous time. Even got to meet some good-looking, kind-hearted firemen (and their wives). You bet I’ll be there again this year. What about you? Will you join me in Berry Creek on August 8th? It’s cooler in the hills, and I promise you a great time. These folks are just downright hospitable.
We have many artistic and talented people in our midst. I recently learned that retired school teacher, Olivia Claire High, will be doing a Book Signing of her newest novel The Crystal Angel, on August 5th at Curves on Myers Street in Oroville.
I originally met Olivia High at a meeting at the Oroville Library. It is known as The Easy Writer’s group. They meet the first and third Tuesday of each month. I was invited by Carol Kitchen. At the time, I had no clue I was rubbing elbows with perhaps soon-to-be famous writers and playwrights. They are easy to talk to, nice to do business with, and are a lot of fun.  There is a lot more to tell you about their novels, books, and plays.
Talking about plays, I just got word about Erle Stanley Gardner, The Perry Mason mysteries and the Monday Club! The Monday Club is another fun, fun, fun place for entertainment and surprises. More on that later.
Hope I’ll see you soon at one of the local events. In the meantime, keep your eyes open and your eye-glasses handy. I will be wearing my usual Gold Cap and carrying my Tick-Toc Purse. My e-mail address is:
