Building Permit Amnesty Program

The City of Oroville recently announced a Residential Building Permit Amnesty Program that will be in effect from June 1, 2009 through October 1, 2009.  The program provides a no-penalty option and assists home owners legalize construction work that may have been done to their homes without a required building permit.
The City’s Code Enforcement Department routinely checks for unpermitted work and the penalty fee doubles the normal permit fee.  During the amnesty program the homeowner will only be responsible for the normal fee.
Virtually any improvement to residential property may require a permit. The California Building Code specifies what is exempt from a building permit; however City staff can best assist you in determining if a completed improvement, or one in progress, requires a permit or not.  For additional information please call (530) 538-2401 or visit the City’s website: www.cityoforoville.org .

I see no need for a city or county code enforcemant department when we are in an economic slump in this country and this state. I believe these departments are nothing more than a money maker for the city and county and should be abolished for residential construction. An amnesty program what a crock of bull. Who can build when alot of people are either out of work or going to be laid off. So whom does this benefit only the city and county. I can understand that not everyone has experience in building construction but I say build at your own risk.
