The Newcomer
(by Della Bacon - June 22, 2009)
It happens every Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. until 1 o’clock.
Maybe you would like to know what I did today! It was only 6:30 a.m., when my dog stirred (The Duchess). She licked me on my face to say ‘Hello.” But, I knew the real reason she kissed me so sweetly was to say, “ Hurry, Hurry, I need to potty ... QUICKLY!!”
I slipped on a robe, fumbled for my shoes, found her leash, my eye-glasses and keys. They were evasive, like what? Where?
She pulled me out the door, like a dog, pulling a sleigh. I thought, “Is this a joke? Do you really have to go?” We got out the gate and I pleaded, “Do it now! Pretty please! Before the neighbors see how I am dressed.” That is really, how today began.
We returned to the house, quiet as a mouse, and proceeded to start our day. After I dressed in my silly gold costume, finishing with the famous Gold Cap, we drove to the Gold Country Casino to enjoy a cup of free coffee and chat with many of our friends. Some dance, some sing, others wiggle and wink. I saw a few put their dollar bills in machines.
What a delight, to watch guys and gals swing. It seems they never miss a beat. I have heard a few criticize or complain. But most came to enjoy the music, dance, and for the companionship, as one would a game. The music is easy, never loud. The crowd is mixed, and not too proud. The coffee is rich; the home-made cakes are so fine. The pleasure of being around this happy group is divine.
When was the last time you cut-loose on a dance-floor? The folks that dance come for the fun. The price is right, and they laugh a lot, rarely cry and actually meet there to swing. A frown or two I have seen, but that is when they have lost their allowance on one of those machines.
Senior Days at Gold Country Casino are Tuesday and Thursday mornings. (8 a.m. - 1 p.m.)
-----------------------------
Generally there is music at Feather River Senior Center (FRSCA) on Myers Street for the more reserved, who prefer Bingo instead. You can wiggle in your seat, clap your hands and tap your feet, at FRSCA, in the mornings. Lunch is served just before noon. (Donation of $2.50 is requested.) After your healthy lunch, stick around and play challenging games of Bingo. Oroville’s Senior Center where lunch is served, Bingo is played, and there are friends waiting for you to meet.
The Senior Center is open 5 days a week Monday-Friday. Coffee and snacks are served in the mornings after 9 a.m. Why not drop by, bring a friend, try your hand at Bingo and plan to visit a while? Keep in mind, that generally there is music on Tuesdays, and frequently on Thursdays. Special events are planned throughout the year. Don’t be shy, don’t cry—join in the fun. There is always a friendly face, volunteer, and others to greet you.
-----------------------------
Farmer’s Markets in and around Oroville are great! There is absolutely no reason not to enjoy meeting friends and neighbors at these events, while you pick up fresh fruit and veggies to feed your fabulous family. Other treats are available too. In one of my columns I told you I taught friends how to cook fresh potatoes in a microwave. I use a Potato Pocket. You can find them at Oroville’s Saturday Farmers Market. Take a drive and enjoy the sights, sounds, and activities. You will be pleased to know it is different each and every week. Certified Farmer’s Markets are: Saturday in downtown Oroville, Thursday at El Medio Fire Department; and Wednesdays at Oroville Hospital. Hope to see you there soon.
-----------------------------
Getting out and about can be ever so much fun. Plan to take a day and see what is happening in Oroville. Check out the classified advertisements in this paper and the Community Events page. I notice there are far more garage sales going on now, compared to last year. Also, so many wonderful gently-used shops are doing a great job of providing furniture, household items, and clothing at very reasonable prices. It is one way to make your dollar go further.
Well folks, I gotta go. Hope to see you downtown soon. Just remember to say “Hi” when you see me coming in my Gold Cap, carrying Correct-Timing Purse. You can even drop me a line on E-Mail: della@diggernews.net
