The Newcomer

(by Della Bacon - June 01, 2009)

What happened to May? It has gone away, and for some reason I feel I missed it? The truth is “I did miss it!”
That’s right, I took a short vacation. But it took the entire month to prepare.  As I was packing, the bathtub overflowed into the bedroom and living area.
In my living area, clothes that were set out on the floor, telephone, computer, and other stuff got wet. This made my life even more frustrating. What a mess!
I called; wanted to cancel and my sweet aunt said,  “Come as you are! If my stuff doesn’t fit, we will stay home!” (I did that, too!)
Traveling from Oroville Gold Country, every step of the way, in my Newcomer outfits!  (Gold Cap, Scarf, Gold Purse, etc.) I had no luggage to check. None to retrieve upon arriving. Just the clothes on my back, with gold-glittery cap and giant golden purse, as my carry-on. (Plus a digital camera.) The one hour trip to Utah took five hours, and could have been uneventful, had I not carried, THE purse and wore The Newcomer/Digger News golden cap.
I got stopped at Sacramento Airport; Portland, Oregon; Boise, Idaho, Salt Lake City, Utah: and Las Vegas, Nevada. I quickly ran out of business cards, and sometimes my patience.  Still, I had a fantastic trip, ate out, and found the right type of yarns. If I go see my greatest auntie again, I think I should carry business cards from Betty Jean’s, (That’s where I purchased the purse, with clock); La De Da (Everyone loved my shoes.) Evolve (I get lovely dresses there.)
The Gold-Clock Purse was my only carry-on.  Oh!  I couldn’t believe it! They had never heard of Pam or Kathleen from Betty Jean’s on Bird Street? (In what town? Oroville, of course!)
You haven’t heard? Pam and John are ‘Personal Shoppers.’ Just like the ones in resort towns, (Neiman Marcus).  Every time someone said, “Where did you get that? Where? I have to have one, etc.) I said loudly, “Betty Jean’s in Oroville, California!” I told them she is only one of my Personal Shoppers!
Betty Jean’s (on Bird Street) found a purse with a clock on it.  It is the size of an over-night case. I got stopped on the street, in the airport, and by family members, who were told to look for the “Purse.” If you are going out of town, be sure to stop by Betty Jean’s and order something unique, so everyone will know who you are, and how to find you, when you get off the plane.
Well, I had a great time. Met some intellectual relatives, ate at various restaurants with Auntie and her friends, and carried my golden, clock-purse, set for California time. If I were a monkey in a zoo, I couldn’t have asked for more attention.
Now, I am home again, dancing the jig, raring to go! What fun it is coming home to Gold Country, Oroville. I get to sleep in my own bed tonight, tomorrow, and the next day. The Downtown Farmer’s Market has opened. I love to visit my new friends, older friends, and the colorful people who fill my basket, at a fair price, and chat, when they have time.
I went to the Saturday Farmer’s Market today and was delighted to see one of my favorite entrepreneurs, T. J. Jensen, owner and promoter of Mug Shots Coffee House & Internet Cafe, on Montgomery Street.
How I admire that young man. He is truly an inspiration to me, and other business-people in this community. Such a great promoter, friend to all. All the while, I just see his sparkle and admire his endurance and love for his fellow-man! Yeah! Talk about networking, promotions, marketing, and getting in there to creaate more busiiness. This young man is a leader and should be an inspiration to anyone who wants independance and to be acknowledged as creative and caring. Oroville’s T. J. is everywhere. He is behind the counter, pouring coffee. He is catering at fund-raisers.
The young man is active in Chamber affairs, City functions, high school graduation parties, weddings and anniversaries. No matter where I see him, he always has a big smile and a bear-hug for me.
New Information: I just learned T. J. makes the desserts (cheesecake) for The River Steakhouse and Lounge. You know, that fancy restaurant on Montgomery Street? They guarantee, “You will enjoy elegant service, food and family fun. Please bring the entire family, including children because they have a very special menu for the young. If you have not been around for a while, then you should stop by, say “Hi” to Sandra & Rick Robertson, owners. When you do, be sure to tell them: “The Newcomer sent me!”
At Oroville’s Saturday Farmer’s Market I got to meet Great Harvest Bread Company aka Baker’s Dozen. It’s a whole-grain bread that is absolutely ‘yummy.’ This family comes all the way from Yuba City, to see us. Why? “Because we are more fun?” Go-on, get out to the Farmer’s Market next Saturday and ask them “Why?” Then, let me know.
You need fun? You need funny? You want to entertain children, teens and /or grandparents? I have met The Gigguls Entertainers that perform for the young, the old, and for all sorts of parties. Gigguls was at the Farmer’s Market making cute balloons and funny talk. He does Balloon Artistry, Clown Skits, Face Painting and Magical Illusions. There is a child in all of us! You can schedule an event and get a quote, just call 530-532-6428. Make the call. Schedule the party, and get me an invitation.
Talking about parties,I felt privileged to join Bill Connelly and his friend Bud at Feather Falls Casino’s dedication of their indoor parking garage. Did you know, Grey Fox Winery is getting a face-lift, thanks to our one and only Bill Connelly?
Home at Last Sanctuary (for Horses) in Yankee Hill is having an Open House on Saturday, June 6th. Everyone is Welcome! Please come. I will be there from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (I forgot to tell you, “This is a Totally GREEN house and property.” You gotta see it! They don’t even have flys, you might want to check it out.
Have questions? Want Directions? Call Jim or Donna Kyle at 530-514-1439. If she is busy (horse work comes before housework), call 530 533-4330.
By the way, The Birdcage is coming out with a new, wonderful, fantastic, humorous play! I told you Oroville has talent, opportunity, and folks who encourage it, with knowledge how to use it! Don’t give up—give instead. Not money; give your own talent! If you have a problem with my belief, that you too can participate, drop me a line! I will respond to you.
What’s happening at The Birdcage Theatre’s next performance is “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest!” Please, please don’t miss it!
Drop me a line or two on the Internet at della@diggernews.com or make your comments to Diggernews.com. It is now in Technicolor.
