The Newcomer

(by Della Bacon - May 04, 2009)

Dont wait until the last minute to say:
Happy Mothers Day, Mom! And a Happy Mothers Day is wished for all the mothers, grandmothers, sisters, brothers, and cousins who became mothers.
How sweet it is to have a special day to be remembered by all.
On Mothers Day (May 10th this year) generally the weather is pleasant enough for a family barbecue, picnic, or an outing where health-conscious people serve fresh fruit, colorful vegetables, cheese & crackers.
What I am going to tell you is, You can turn any ordinary day into a fun-filled Family Festival by checking out what our town has in store. The Fun Starts Here ... Oroville Means It! The Oroville Chamber of Commerce has said so, the Downtown Business Association has confirmed it, and the City and County Offices are supporting it! Tourists, relatives and long-lost friends are travelling the highways to get here and see what we are doing to help families that stayed together, go back to playing together.
You want history? We have a library and historical museums. We have a Chinese Temple and the Lott Home. We have the historic State Theatre. We have a visitors center at the lake, that has historic videos that you can view for free. We even have an antique tool museum.
You will never have to be alone or lonely in our town. If you are a Senior, our Senior Center is active five days a week. There is always lively conversation and a fresh cup of coffee. Many folks play cards, and more come for lunch then Bingo. Music is provided on Tuesdays, and other days, when the musical ones drop by the center and volunteer. I have seen one gentleman, who depends on a walker for support, Jitter-Bug with willing ladies. What do you want for Mothers Day? Ask your children to take you to Feather River Senior Citizens Association located on Myers Street in Oroville.
A special event is planned there for Saturday, May 9th. If breakfast is your favorite meal out, it will be served from 6 to 10 a.m. Maybe lunch is your preference. What about pie a la mode? You like Bingo? FRSCA wants you to drop by and check them out for any of the above.
In fact, all of downtown will be happening on May 9th because of Feather Fiesta Days. On that Saturday, take in the Grand Parade (10 a.m.), Classic Car Show, Craft Faire in Sank Park, Springfest at St. Thomas School, and lots more. Stop by The Digger office for a brochure that lists all events and times, plus has a nice map in it, too. The events are also listed on the Community Events page in this issue of The Digger.
I plan to be dining at the El Medio Fire Department on May 10th, when they have their annual Mothers Day Ham Dinner. Besides, they promised me a ride on a fire engine that day!
You want more action? Ill give you action—The Dancing Seniors swing to beautiful music (Silver Hair Country) at the Southside Community Center, on Wyandotte Ave.
Are you shy? Are you bold? Either way, you really dont have to be old. You can swing with someone, or swing alone. No partners are required. Contact Dottie and Jim at 530-534-0818. Your out-of-town friends will be impressed.
Now, if that doesnt suit your fancy, some of these talented people unite at Gold Country Casino on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8 to 11 a.m. practicing new dance steps and enjoying excellent music. You can sit in the back by yourself No one will bother you.
I try to make it there every Tuesday morning for lively conversation and a good cup of coffee. I wear a Gold Cap and carry a Time-Machine Gold Purse. After I leave the casino, I go Downtown Oroville.
Shopping in Downtown Oroville gets better and better. What are you looking for?
Sweets for your Sweetheart? I suggest you call my friend, Nicole Wallace (530-533-8861). She manages The Lighthouse Candy Shoppe on Bird Street. With a name like Candy Shoppe you might expect candy. This store is chuck-full of chocolates, taffy, and a unique supply of everthing sweet. If you talk nice, Nicole will personalize a Gift-Basket and fill it to your order. Her ideas are priceless. Like Red-Riding Hood, I love carrying a basketful of sweets to grandmothers house in the forest.
Something Old? Grandmas Mission of Hope Thrift Shoppe, is across Bird Street from the Candy Shoppe. No, no, no—it is not old. As a matter of fact, it is rather new, with a variety of gently used clothing, furniture, and household items. I saw baby furniture and revived electronics. Grandma loves to garden, and she has seedlings sprouting. Drop by, say Hi, and tell her The Newcomer sent you.
Something New? Nicole Wallace has a dream and she will help turn your dream into a reality. Nicole is also a Wedding Planner with lots of experience. From start to finish, this woman can tell you how to do it! Get engaged; plan special events. From invitations to a photographer, she can guide you through the process.
Watch for more information about this active young lady and her plans for planning special events.
Something Borrowed? You might want to check out the newest addition to Bird Street Thrift Shops—Re-Stored is the name. There are new items, used items, and lots of other items. Re-Stored is located next to The Shirt Shack and across from Northwestern Trading Company and Betty Jeans.
Something Blue? Why not drop by La De Das. They tell me they are increasing their inventory to include Bridal Accessories. That is so exciting!
Elegant Elouise cant stay away, ‘cause she just loves Historic Downtown Oroville. I mean, its in her blood; Day Dreams is now open Friday and Saturdays from 11 a.m. til 3 p.m. (Until further notice.)
You can write, you can call, or you can just say HI! Email address is della@diggernews.com
