The Newcomer
(by Della Bacon - April 20, 2009)
April Showers Bring May Flowers: Sunshine and Spring-Breaks also bring families and friends together right here in Oroville, CA. It is the time of the year, for you to take advantage of our beautiful historical Downtown.
The State Theatre is getting a face-lift under that white plastic. Inside, the busy bees of Oroville are sprucing things up with fresh paint, new carpets and drapes. Internal and external modifications are also underway. Once known as the favorite North State Vaudeville Playhouse, for the superstars of yesteryear from Hollywood and New York. In the meantime, the “ show must go-on,” as scheduled!
Check out the new curtains rising on “Damn Yankees” this weekend. Sunday, April 26th, will be your last chance. Could be the most beautiful, luxurious curtains to be displayed on any stage, but more importantly, (today) are the folks who have put their hearts and souls into bringing you this performance.
The stage play “Damn Yankees” is great! As are the 25 plus contributors to these outstanding performances. I felt honored to be invited to some of the rehearsals. It was such a pleasure to mingle with the stars, supporting actors, actresses, and all the folks who you never get to see on stage. I mean the professional and semi-professional talents, who do the work behind the scenes.
You get the opportunity to see the finished product, the polished performances, the amazing results of their dedicated efforts. Does this sound like an advertisement? You bet it is! So, if you didn’t take the time to see Damn Yankees, at The State Theatre, last weekend, do it now! I promise you an evening of fun, laughter and tears of joy.
Artists of Rivertown, take turns in displaying the work of local artists at The State Theatre. The lobby is open from Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Don’t wait for company or out-of-town guests to explore. Make it a point to drop by whenever you are in the area. It is true, there are many paintings on the wall, but that’s not all: It is free. It is informative. It is culture. Many of the items are priced to sell and would look fantastic in your home by the lake, in the mountains.
Creative art and artists come in many forms. Check-out the Ceramics, Pottery, Jewelry, Graphite and Photography displays. Everyone seems to have their own unique talent. If you are lucky, you might get to meet some of the talented ones, including a few who teach their craft: Dawn Cozine teaches Photography, Sue Hees has classes on making Jewelry. Heather Walker teaches Pencil. Who knows? Each artist has his or her own story of how they developed their talent. If you are really lucky, you just might obtain an autograph. I have! And, I keep collecting autographs and interesting stories. It is just not possible for me to write about everything and everyone I meet, in one column. All I ask is for you to keep reading each, and I will keep writing about my adventures in town.
You will never know what you are missing, until you step inside The State Theatre. There is no charge to look. Many items are priced to sell, and make beautiful gifts, in addition to sprucing up your own home decor. If you want to develop your own special artistic talent, drop by the theatre and talk with the best of the best. They take turns displaying their creative works.
While you are downtown, stop by and have lunch, coffee or a snack at one of the many outstanding meeting places: Coffee Diem is new to old town, located on Myers Street across from What To Wear and The Address.
Scoops is handy and doesn’t serve just ice cream and luscious desserts. They feature a new healthy menu, with lower prices to boot. Plus they have special Game and Movie Nights. It’s not just for little kids. It’s for families and big kids like me. I believe in treats for good children and nurturing grandparents.
Where else can you find a variety of homemade Taffy, but The Lighthouse Candy Shop? Nicole Wallace, the store manager is one, hard-working, young lady with some super-intelligent ideas.
T. J. Jensen is everywhere. When he is not personally serving Gourmet Coffee and Teas at Mugshots Coffee House on Montgomery Street, he is catering a party or wedding somewhere else. Everybody loves our T.J.
The Golden Poppy is full of surprises with good, solid, healthy food and a fresh salad bar, homemade soup and sandwiches. It is a great place to mingle. They offer fresh food and low prices.
If you are in town, looking for a dinner house, featuring ‘local’ wine, why not stop by The River, (formerly Old Town Bar & Grill). They offer comfy-foods for the entire family, and special menus for the kiddies.
Peanuts on the floor. Peanuts on the table-at Boss Burger’s, a favorite meeting place. They have built a solid reputation by providing quickie hamburgers of all sizes 7 days a week. They are on the road to everywhere, located at the famous ‘round-about’, where they have been located for years at the end of Montgomery St. The variety of food and fun is continuous. The Boss brings in hungry crowds on Sundays & Wednesdays, by offering 99-cent Burgers. People come all decked out from church and bring baskets to be filled for picnicking.
